Welcome to Maple View School

I am delighted to welcome you to Maple View School. We are a small, independent specialist school for children aged 6 to 16 with autism, moderate to severe learning difficulties, and speech, language, and communication needs.

What makes us truly unique is our size and our therapeutic approach: every pupil is known, understood, and supported as an individual, and our close-knit community allows us to tailor learning and care in a highly personalised way. Our approach is rooted in the social model of disability. We believe that challenges do not lie within the child, but within the barriers around them, and together we work to remove those barriers, unlocking every pupil’s potential to thrive. Our setting in Mackworth gives us the best of both worlds: the opportunities of Derby City, with its rich cultural and educational resources, alongside the calm and beauty of nearby rural green spaces. This balance allows our pupils to experience both the vibrancy of the city and the therapeutic benefits of the countryside, supporting their learning, wellbeing, and independence. Alongside our school, we are proud to have a registered children’s home on-site, offering residential placements from 38-week to 52-week provision. This enables us to provide stability, consistency, and a true sense of belonging for those who need it most. Our highly skilled multi-disciplinary therapy team, including Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychiatry, Clinical psychology and Music Therapy, works hand-in-hand with our teaching staff. Together, we provide holistic support that meets each child’s academic, social, emotional, and communication needs in an integrated way. We are more than just a school; we are a community where children are given the tools to succeed, both now and in the future. I warmly invite you to visit us, meet our team, and see first-hand the difference our unique setting can make.

Our Values At our school, everything we do is built upon three core values:

Kindness Bravery Independence

Kindness shapes the way we treat one another, creating a caring and respectful community where everyone feels valued and supported. Bravery inspires us to face challenges with courage. As a special school, we understand that what may seem like a small step to some can be a huge achievement for our pupils — and we celebrate every success. Independence empowers our pupils to think for themselves, make choices, and develop the skills they need to thrive in learning and in life. These values are at the heart of our teaching, learning, and relationships. They guide us every day, helping our pupils grow not only as learners, but as thoughtful, resilient, and confident individuals.

The Curriculum

Children learn in small class groups of just 3–4 pupils, carefully arranged by age, ability, communication style, social dynamics, and sensory needs. Our school day runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday, providing a calm and structured routine that supports both learning and wellbeing. The curriculum is bespoke to each child, developed from their EHCP outcomes alongside their academic needs. Every pupil has individual learning intentions, reviewed termly to ensure progress remains meaningful and responsive. We offer two curriculum pathways: The Growth Pathway and The Formal Pathway. A child may move between these as they progress and embed new skills, supported by their own curriculum map, which is reviewed half-termly. This flexible structure ensures learning always matches each child’s abilities, needs, and aspirations.

Core learning includes PSHE, numeracy, and literacy, taught daily as essential foundations for progress. A half-termly whole-school book provides the focus for cross-curricular topic learning, covering art, science, literacy, and the humanities while fostering a love of reading and uniting pupils across the school in shared study. Learning also extends well beyond the classroom; it is delivered through the Rooted Curriculum (see below).

"Pupils gain valuable life skills such as self-care, how to live healthy lives and how to keep themselves safe" Ofsted 2025

From Year 9 onwards, pupils begin working towards ASDAN qualifications, following the Life Skills Challenge pathway. This programme focuses on practical skills for adulthood while also embedding literacy and numeracy. Pupils are supported through access to our dedicated Life Skills room, designed to help them practise and master independent living skills. Our close partnership with Derby University teacher training means our staff remain highly skilled and up to date with the latest teaching methodologies. This connection strengthens our ability to deliver a high-quality curriculum that balances academic progress with personal growth, well-being, and independence. 06

Rooted Curriculum Our Rooted Learning Curriculum is designed so that all children have access to therapeutic, nature-connected experiences such as Forest School, Horticulture, Animal Care, and Yoga.

.

These activities support emotional regulation, resilience, and well-being while fostering empathy, independence, curiosity, and social skills. Through inclusive, hands-on learning and meaningful connections with nature and animals, every pupil develops confidence, communication, and a strong sense of responsibility. The result is improved well-being, greater independence, and a culture of growth and care that prepares children for lifelong success.

"Pupils are well placed to meet, or exceed, the outcomes identified in EHC plans" Ofsted 2025

Activities & Facilities The school is equipped with a wide range of facilities to meet the diverse needs of pupils. We have a modern, high-tech sensory room, a fully equipped movement room for occupational therapy programmes, a life skills room for delivering ASDAN qualifications and developing independence, and a dedicated outdoor classroom to support our Rooted Learning Curriculum. Younger pupils benefit from dedicated outdoor spaces for play-based learning, alongside specialist facilities such as a cycle track and sunken trampoline. Every classroom includes a breakout area, a quiet, shared space for pupils to regulate throughout the day.

Learning also extends beyond the school grounds: pupils throughout the year access swimming, Cycle Derby, and horse riding, as well as the many opportunities offered by our close proximity to Derby City. These include trips to local supermarkets for plan–shop–cook activities, visits to the Derby Faith Trail, the Museum of Making, Derby Museum and Art Gallery, and many more.

Residential Homes Our Home provides residential placements for up to 7 children. The ethos of Maple View Children’s Home is our individualised approach, the same as in the school. Every element of the Child’s care plan is bespoke to them; whether that be the number of nights they stay, their specific routine, the input from professional services, diet, cultural and religious preferences.

The Home and School are one building, supporting any difficulties with transitions. There are three spacious lounges and two kitchens, each child has a room of their own, personalised for them, ready for their arrival and with en-suite facilities. The school facilities are available to the residential children to use after school, at weekends and during school holidays. In addition the care team plan activities and trips in line with the children’s interests.

Health and Wellbeing

Our Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists are a key part of school life. They work onsite, offering support that is practical, responsive, and tailored to each child. Our therapists not only provide individual or small- group sessions, but also train and upskill staff so that every member of the team feels confident in supporting children’s communication, independence, and daily living skills.

We offer three levels of support: Universal Offer – Ensuring all children can participate in school life and learning by removing, where possible, barriers to learning. This includes providing the necessary systems, equipment, and support so every child can thrive. Targeted Offer – Everyday activities such as snack time, mealtimes, play, or community visits are carefully adapted to build specific skills naturally and engagingly. Specialist Offer – Led by the child’s EHCP and therapist-identified needs, the therapy team provide 1:1 therapy and written class-based programmes designed and monitored by therapists, and delivered by classroom staff to meet individual needs.

For the children living within our residential home, therapy is embedded into a 24/7 waking day curriculum. This means therapeutic strategies are woven into every part of a child’s day, from morning routines to evening activities, ensuring consistency, generalisation of skills, and a truly holistic, bespoke approach to the development of skills. By working together in this way, we make sure every child receives the right support at the right time, helping them to achieve their full potential and develop maximum independence with their communication and life skills.
