ROYAL PARK PLACE Life at Royal Atrium Inn A Message from Rick VandenBerg How to Live Out

inspired in us, and I see this in Angie every day. Every act of compassion, every goal we pursue, and every moment we choose joy over despair becomes a quiet, powerful testament to their impact on our lives—and you can experience this simply by sitting down with Angie for a little while and letting her share her wonderful life and marriage. Living our best lives means embracing the present while carrying the lessons of the past. We can channel grief into growth by reflecting on the values our loved ones held dear. Did they believe in generosity? Then give freely. Were they resilient in hardship? Then rise again when life gets difficult. In this way, they live on through our actions. Angie will be the first to tell of how she and Dennis worshipped our God and how Angie continues to practice her faith every day at Royal Atrium Inn. She blesses so many people—residents and staff with her life teachings. Creating personal rituals can also help us stay connected. A walk in their favorite park, cooking their signature recipe, or simply lighting a candle on special days can become moments of reflection and remembrance. These habits remind us that love doesn’t end—it evolves. I love to listen to Angie reflect on her life and

Our Best Lives While Honoring Those We’ve Lost: A Story of Angie V.H.

Losing someone we love is one of life’s most profound challenges, and it eventually affects us all. Grief alters us—it reshapes how we see the world, how we love, and how we live. Yet, in the midst of loss, there lies a powerful opportunity: to live our best lives not in spite of their absence, but as a tribute to their presence. This holds true for my friend Angie, who has had to deal with the loss of her dear husband, Dennis, and how much she misses him every day. He would be so proud of how she has carried on with life and how much she holds true to God’s love and word. She is someone who demonstrates living her best life despite all the challenges put before her. Honoring those who have passed doesn’t always require grand gestures or public tributes. Often, the most meaningful way to honor them is to live with purpose, kindness, and courage—the very traits they may have

her very long marriage to Dennis. It makes me want to be more like him—not only in how he followed Jesus but as a person. Moreover, sharing stories about those we’ve lost keeps their spirit alive. By telling others how they shaped our lives, we pass their influence forward, allowing their memory to inspire beyond our own lifetime, something that Angie loves to do. She keeps Dennis alive with her accounts of their life. You can see it in her kids and grandkids alike. Ultimately, living our best lives is not about “moving on,” but moving forward—with them still in our hearts. By pursuing a life that is full, authentic, and rooted in love, we ensure that their legacy is not only remembered but actively lived, something that Angie does perfectly. Her heart is full of love and generosity. In living well, we honor them not just with our memories—but with our lives. I am so thankful that I got to know Dennis before he passed and was able to witness the tremendous bond Angie and Dennis shared.

Chaplain’s Corner: Mezuzah Mishaps & Me

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5). Jesus later echoed this command and added, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

After we returned from Israel, I realized that a small plaque I’d received 15 years earlier from one of my pastors was actually a mezuzah! I was able to find the box it had come in (a good thing, since I keep everything…) and was amazed to find the scroll with the ancient writings still tucked inside. It took a trip to Israel for me to realize what I’d had in my possession all along! Mezuzah Mishap #2! I immediately mounted the mezuzah with the scroll tucked inside on the doorframe of our home, and I read it or touch it every time I enter. More recently, while visiting a resident at the Royal Atrium Inn,

These words from the ancient Shema, given to Moses by God and recorded in Deuteronomy and reiterated by Jesus throughout His earthly ministry, are still frequently quoted today as important words to live by. When visiting Israel in 2023, I noticed that every doorway, including those leading to each hotel room we stayed in, had a mezuzah attached. Inscribed on the outside of a mezuzah is a blessing over those entering the dwelling, and on a paper inside are the words of the Shema, along with other writings from the Old Testament Law. I was curious whether our hotel room mezuzah had a scroll inside, so I

I noticed she had a mezuzah right next to the door of her apartment. Out of habit, I touched it as I was leaving— and it fell off the wall onto the floor! Mezuzah Mishap #3! I was never more grateful for the soft carpet it landed on and immediately reaffixed it to the wall.

My mezuzah mishaps remind me of all of the ways I often fail in my daily walk with God—I do things I shouldn’t and forget to do things I should, like I did with the mezuzah in Israel; I don’t even recognize the tremendous blessings God has given me, like the mezuzah I didn’t even know I had; and I drop the ball (or mezuzah!) or break things, like relationships with family and friends, even when I may mean

decided to investigate. Sure enough, I found the writings in both Hebrew and English. I realized after we moved on to our next hotel, that I’d forgotten to tell the hotel staff to replace the scroll I’d removed—Mezuzah Mishap #1!

well. I am so grateful for a loving Savior who forgives my mistakes and mishaps and is a safe place to land, just like the carpet on a Royal Atrium Inn room! Thanks be to God for his boundless grace and mercy—but I’d still say if you have a mezuzah, you may want to keep it away from me! With my affection for each of you, Chaplain Cindy Nyhoff “I will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to all of us. At the Table On September 16, we celebrate National Guacamole Day!

While the day itself doesn’t exactly seem to have any particularly poetic origin, National Guacamole Day is a terrific excuse to indulge in the tastiest of dips! However, guacamole itself appears to have its origins among the Aztec people group at some point before the 16th century. Early guacamole recipes typically included only mashed avocado, and it gained popularity due to the excellent health benefits of the avocado. Adding in the tomatoes and onions came later, which was a natural development since those are also native to the Americas. Eventually, the lime juice was added, which originated in the Middle East but spread west with the arrival of Christopher Columbus. The word, guacamole, originally came from the word “āhuacamolli” which translates literally to mean “avocado sauce”. Not only is it a great addition to a savory spread, it’s also good for you! This is because “guac” is made from avocados, which are nutrient-dense and packed with healthy fats that help the body lower bad cholesterol, all of which contribute to having a good ol’ time and living as long as possible.

Comedy Corner ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

An elderly couple was driving across the country. While the woman was behind the wheel, the couple was pulled over by the highway patrol. “Ma’am, did you know you were speeding?” the officer said. The woman, hard of hearing, turned to her husband and asked, “What did he say?” “He said you were speeding!” the old man yelled. The patrolman then asked, “May I see your license?” The woman turned to her husband again, “What did he say?” The old man yelled back, “ He wants to see your license!” The woman then gave the officer her license. “I see you are from Arkansas,” the patrolman said. “I spent some time there once and went on a blind date with the ugliest woman I’ve ever seen.” The woman turned to her husband again
