"THINGS TO COME" A STUDY IN BIBLICAL ESCHATOLOGY By J. Dwight Pentecost, Th.D.

ship of faith to religion he goes on to consider p h i l o s o p h i c a l e t h i c s — Augustine, Catholicism, Calvinism, and John Dewey. He must lament the fact that what little influence the Christian religion has now in once strongly Christian New England is wielded by the Roman Catholics. Modem liberalism is strongly indicted by the author for its positions which undermine the strength of the primi tive Christian faith for personal re generation and effective social action. 247 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publ. Co.; Grand Rapids; $3.50. Abraham to the Middle-East Crisis By G. Frederick Owen Picture, with a sweep of the mind, a panorama of history from Abraham to the Atomic Age, including dates, dynasties, places and faces and you have in mind what G. Frederick Owen, Orient scholar and lecturer, talks about in this book. With statements perhaps a little too positive on the subjective reflections of ancient records, Owen’s absorbing account of the centuries (including biblical history with the life of Christ in order of events) is set down in an almost fireside chatty tone, albeit each sentence is loaded with abun dant research. Owen’s sweetest narrative is con tained in the story of Abraham to the death and resurrection of Christ. After that his awful tell-all reports of the Crusades of Christians to “ save the Holy Sepulchre” from Arabs brings immortal shame upon the name of these so-called Christians. The author’s account cannot be called interpretative reporting. He sets down only the events incident to the tale and leaves the reader to his own surmisings (for example, Owen refers to Hanukkah, the Jewish Feast of Lights, as only a commemoration of the deliverance of Jerusalem by the Maccabees and says nothing about its present significance to Jew ish Christians: that Jesus is the Light of the world). On the last page Israel’s prime minister, weary with war and ani mosity against his country, reads kingdom promises from Isaiah and says, “ It will come with time — it is the will of God.” 429 pages; cloth; Wm.
