It’s a skill to know how to value your work and pay yourself fairly. It’s a skill to ask for that. We’re passionate about what we do, and we’ll do anything to bring our visions to life, but we don’t necessarily know where to find opportunities, or how to negotiate our fees. Being able to ask to be paid for what you love doing, that ability and feeling that you have licence to be taken seriously and get paid comes from a certain life experience. Not everyone starts at the same level of privilege and entitlement. Equity does not mean treating everyone the same, it means creating conditions where everyone has the same chances of success. White or middle class artists often have more academic experience than us, better connections, more common ground with funders and that entitlement to ask for more.

“IF YOU’VE BEEN TOLD IN SCHOOL YOU’RE A TROUBLEMAKER AND YOUR FAMILY DON’T SUPPORT YOUR CREATIVE CAREER, THEN HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO HAVE THAT CONFIDENCE TO ASK FOR MORE?”; “I FEEL LIKE THE OBSTACLES SOME CREATIVES MAY FACE IN WALES ARE TRYING TO PENETRATE THE CIRCLE THAT WALES HAS. IT’S A LOT OF THE SAME PEOPLE, DOING A LOT OF THE SAME THINGS WITH THE SAME ORGANISATIONS. IT'S DIFFICULT TO GET YOUR FOOT IN THAT DOOR.” ; “WE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO VALUE OURSELVES.”
