This One Made It to the Top of My List MICHAEL SCHUR’S ‘HOW TO BE PERFECT’ IS A MUST-READ! WE ARE CELEBRATING 42 YEARS OF SERVING CRIMINAL DEFENSE AND PERSONAL INJURY CLIENTS IN THE SAN DIEGO REGION! TO ALL WHO HAVE AFFORDED ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE MY PASSION — THANK YOU!

If you aren’t familiar with Michael Schur and his media creations, I’d like to introduce you to his greatness. Surely, you’ve heard of “The Office” or “The Good Place”? Well, Michael Schur was a writer and producer for “The Office” and created “The Good Place.” But his work doesn’t stop there. Along with Greg Daniels (a producer of “The Office”), he co-created “Parks and Recreation” and “Rutherford Falls” and also served as a producer on “Master of None.” He has even tested out his acting abilities and did a great job playing Mose Schrute, Dwight Schrute’s

philosophical and light life lessons presented in “The Good Place” and makes them applicable to our everyday lives. Throughout the compelling chapters in the book, Schur provides some philosophical points that are easy for everyone to understand. No matter who you are, you’ll find some key takeaways and laughs on every page.

with the answers to some silly questions that you may have asked yourself before at one point or another such as, “Should I punch my friend in the face for no reason?” Normally, philosophy brain teasers, articles, and novels will leave you scratching your head with a giant headache, but Schur has a way of incorporating humor into some relevant conundrums we experience every day. It’s a light way to explore some of the biggest issues in today’s world. His narrative is engaging and entertaining, and unlike other philosophical reads, this one kept me wanting more. If you find yourself with some extra time on your hands in between appointments, on the bus, before bed, or at the kids’ sporting events, give “How to Be Perfect” a read. It’s light, thought-provoking, funny, and totally serious all at the same time. It’ll help you along your journey to be a better person while sprinkling some humor into your day. Let me know what you think!

If you’ve watched “The Good Place,” you know there are some deep underlying philosophical

messages hidden in there. In his book, Schur digs a little deeper and answers some questions that may result from the series. You may be asking yourself, “Do I need to have seen ‘The Good Place’ to read this one?” and I’m here to tell you that, no, you don’t need to catch up on the show first, but there will be some spoilers in there. “How to Be Perfect” had me pondering some thoughts and questions. Schur goes through and provides you

cousin, on “The Office.” Back in 1998, Schur started out as a writer on “Saturday Night Live,” and in 2001, he went on to be a producer of “The Weekend Update.” He’s a funny guy with a lot of creativity and wit. I recently completed his book, “How To Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question,” and this one had me laughing from beginning to end. The entire book takes the

Give Your Siding a Spring Scrub! 3 TIPS FOR WASHING HOME’S OUTSIDE WALLS

You might not have noticed it, but winter conditions or general wear and tear have built up on your home’s siding. From layers of dirt to clumps of pollen, dirty siding not only ruins your home’s curb appeal, but it can also ruin your home.

So, as the weather begins to warm and you have more time in your days, give that siding a good wash with the following tips in mind. LEAVE THE POWERWASHER IN THE GARAGE. A common way for people to clean the siding on their house is to take out the old pressure washer and blast that dirt away. However, experts recommend against this method because, depending on the angle of the spray, water can get behind the siding and cause damage to your home. Not only that, but high water pressure can damage the siding if you’re not careful. GRAB THAT SOFT-BRISTLED BRUSH! Instead of a high-powered blast-off, the best way to wash your siding is with a garden hose and soft brush. Many home improvement stores sell siding cleaning

solutions in spray bottles that attach directly to your hose.

PRE-SPRAY AND SPRAY OFTEN. Before cleaning a section, spray it with water to allow dirt or debris to soften and release its hold on your home. Start with small areas at the bottom of the wall. Gently scrub away dirt with solution and a brush. As you clean from the bottom to the top, re-spray each section beneath it because soapy water from the siding above will trail down and may leave a residue. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the wall to avoid streaking. And finally, enjoy your clean house! By scrubbing your siding just once a year, you can increase its longevity and your home’s curb appeal!

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR REGULARLY Take Charge of Your Health

COMPLIANCE After visiting a doctor for a checkup, following a vehicle accident, or to treat a condition, follow through with the treatment plan you and your doctor decide on. If your doctor requests that you take a medication and wants to schedule a follow-up visit in three weeks, be sure you cooperate. If they recommend physical therapy or a specialist, it’s imperative that you follow their advice — your health and sometimes your case can depend on it! HONESTY When seeing your doctor, be honest about what’s going on. Keep in mind that the information you share is confidential and your doctor has seen it all; there’s nothing to ever be embarrassed about or ashamed of. Certain health conditions may be uncomfortable to discuss, but when it comes to safeguarding your health, honesty is the best policy!

It’s important that you take charge of your medical care and follow the treatment plan your doctor lays out for you, especially when it comes to your legal or personal injury case. In many personal injury or workers’ compensation cases, doctors are called upon as medical witnesses to prove or disprove certain aspects of the case. Whether or not you have an active case right now, I call on you to prioritize your health and make sure you put your medical care first. RESEARCH One of the greatest relationships you will lean on in life is the one you have with your doctor. Before you visit a new doctor, it’s important to research their background, qualifications, and practice areas. Then, before your first visit, compile a list of questions you have for the doctor to ensure you arrive prepared to build a relationship and treatment plan.

Case Success Stories Recent Big Wins

HAVE A LAUGH

Every case varies and each client is different, but one thing stays the same: We enjoy the challenge and are passionate about ensuring our clients’ needs are met. In our personalized approach, we’ve recently celebrated some great wins that have helped our clients move forward with their lives.

DRUG IMPORTATION CASE — NOT GUILTY Drug transportation crimes can often lead to criminal penalties and sentencing. In one of our recent cases that went to trial, our client got stopped while traveling across the border and 100 pounds of methamphetamine were found hidden within the door panels of the vehicle and other areas of the car. Following the trial, our client was found not guilty. DRUG IMPORTATION CASE — CASE DISMISSED In another recent serious drug importation case in which our client got stopped while crossing the border with illegal drugs, the case was dismissed before it even made it to trial. CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE CASE — NO TIME Sometimes, like in the case of our client, drug cases can wind up in federal court and carry some potentially serious penalties and sentences. Our client was allegedly part of a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and after we went to trial, he will not do any time in custody. MEDICAL MALPRACTICE — FULL POLICY LIMIT PAID Medical malpractice cases can leave our clients with some very serious physical and emotional damages. We recently had a case go to trial in California where (at the time) emotional distress damages were limited to $250,000. Despite that, we proved additional economic damages over $750,000; the full policy limit ended up being paid, and we settled for $1,000,000. MEDICAL MALPRACTICE — BIG SETTLEMENT In a recent medical malpractice case, we reached a $1.4 million settlement with the maximum $250,000 non‑economic damages cap.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF IMPROVED BALANCE

4

HOW IMPROVED BALANCE EMPOWERS YOUR ACTIONS

One of the best benefits of having solid balance is reducing the likelihood of falling and getting injured. When you have good balance, you’re less likely to trip and fall, which usually leads to severe injuries. Nothing is worse than slipping and breaking a bone or injuring your head, which is why keeping up with balance exercises is vital, regardless of age. Another fantastic benefit of improved balance is increased mobility and flexibility. With good balance, you can move more freely and easily, making everyday tasks like walking, running, and climbing stairs easier. This can also lead to improved overall fitness and physical health. Good balance can even help if you’ve been suffering from poor posture or back pain, as it improves posture and alignment. Not all of the benefits of proper balance are physical, though. You can also experience significant mental benefits. Good balance helps reduce stress and anxiety and improves your focus and concentration. This can cause you to do better in work or school while enhancing your overall quality of life. You may also feel more confident or boost your self- esteem since balance can help with general fitness and physical health. It’s never too late to start improving your balance. Try doing yoga or performing balance exercises, and you’ll quickly notice various improvements to your mental and physical well-being.

Balance is essential in everything you do, every day, all the time. Most of the time, you maintain your balance without even realizing it. However, you may notice a decline in your ability to balance as you age or after suffering an injury. You can combat this decline by performing balance exercises, such as yoga, standing on one leg, or walking heel-to-toe. You’ll notice numerous benefits in all aspects of your life when you practice proper balance.
