Welcome to the Spring UK regional newsletter

I n March we announced that the firm will be merging with BLM, a UK based insurance focused firm which specialises in casualty, healthcare and regional professional lines defence. The merger is all about meeting our strategic objectives of building and maintaining market leadership positions in our chosen sectors, in this case insurance. You will, I hope, have had a chance to join one of the webinars explaining the merger and updating you on the integration. You can find more details in this newsletter, including a Q&A with Matthew Harrington, BLM’s Senior Partner. This is a really positive move for both firms as we build a market leading casualty insurance practice and compete in what is a very dynamic part of the market. We are excited to welcome our new colleagues when the merger goes live on 1 July and I would like to thank all the teams and individuals across the firm who are working so hard to get ready for go live and the integration process that will stretch many months into the future.

As we head into the summer months we can reflect on what we’ve achieved so far. Not only have we continued to win and service mandates across our practices but we also announced and started work on the second biggest UK law firm merger in history.

We recently announced our annual promotions to the Partnership and to Legal Director. It is fantastic to have such large cohorts for both sets of promotions, globally and in the UK, and on behalf of the UK Board I would like to congratulate all those promoted. You can read more about our new Partners and Legal Directors in this newsletter. This newsletter also shares our progress against our strategic priorities this calendar year, along with news from across our region and upcoming activities and initiatives. You will find details about a range of Corporate Responsibility & Inclusion initiatives which have taken place, including the recent launch of the wellbeing app Champion Health. You can also read about the launch of our Clyde+ Information Hub, find details about our recent client and panel wins and read some of the feedback we have received from clients. If you would like to find out more information about any of the topics covered in this newsletter, what is coming up in the future, or you have a story you would like to share in the Summer UK newsletter please email internalcommunications@clydeco.com.

Stronger as one

In March we announced that our partners had voted in favour of a merger with BLM. This followed detailed discussions over many months, including with clients of both firms, and we are excited to welcome BLM colleagues into Clyde & Co when the combination goes live on 1 July.

T he merger is in line with our firm’s strategy – to build and maintain leadership positions in our chosen sectors, which are insurance, aviation, projects and construction and what we now call EMNR (Energy, Marine and Natural Resources). While we are undisputed leaders in insurance law globally and number one in the UK broadly, a strategic review in 2020 identified opportunities to be gained by significantly strengthening our UK casualty insurance offering, our regional professional liability offering and our healthcare practice.

coming together with BLM was the preferred option. The reasons for this were good client and panel alignment, cultural fit and an expectation that combining the two firms would be favourably viewed by clients and the market. Integration plans are well underway and you will receive inviations to meetings to find out more about the integration. In the meantime if you have any questions about the merger, please first refer to the FAQ document which you can access here. If you would like to submit new questions, you can do so here.

We looked at several ways to grow the Casualty practice and concluded that

Introducing Matthew Harrington, Senior Partner at BLM

Ahead of the combination going live in July Matthew Harrington shares his views on why the merger is a positive development for both BLM and Clyde & Co.

Tell us a bit about your career so far. I joined BLM as Partner in 2007 to set up its Cardiff office and in 2010 extended the firm’s footprint by helping to create a new office in Bristol. Because I joined from a small firm I had quite a mixed practice doing everything from large loss injury, occupational disease and health and safety cases. My practice such as it is now leans more towards Health and Safety. Leading BLM as Senior Partner over the last four years or so as has been a privilege – our experts are second-to- none and we are all very positive as to what the future holds after 1 July. I am very proud to have been at the helm as Senior Partner and see the firm become a market leader in so many areas particularly our suite of award-winning innovative business solutions and work with the London School of Economics.

What does the merger mean to you?

across the regions, as well as elevate our healthcare practice to the top echelons in the UK. Clyde & Co is absolutely the right choice for BLM.

When I became Senior Partner in 2018, I clearly set out my ambitions for the firm which were to continue on our journey in becoming a market-leading insurance and risk law firm. I’m very proud that we achieved that in lots of areas. Now almost four and a half years later, as the market rapidly changes and businesses are consolidating, including our clients, the advantages of a merger with Clyde & Co were obvious. Not only do we share common values, the merger will strengthen our position as an insurance and risk expert with enhanced global capabilities. Clyde & Co’s strategic objectives are very similar to ours and provides us with the much needed growth to develop our business for the benefit of our people and our clients. As a merged firm, we will be the market leader in casualty and extend Clyde & Co’s London Market offering to market leader position

How are the integration plans going?

The integration is going very well, we are working so well with our Clyde colleagues. As you can imagine there are a lot of moving parts during this process and the priority here has to be the wellbeing of our people so we are working hard to ensure the integration is as smooth as possible for all. I’d like to thank everyone from BLM and Clyde & Co that are working tirelessly to support the transition ahead of July.

Carol joined the firm on 25 January 1999 working in our Guildford office as a Payroll Administrator, and on retiring was Senior Payroll Advisor. Carol is celebrating her retirement by going on a well-deserved holiday to St Lucia and, on her return, plans to spend lots of quality time with her grandchildren, as well as on the golf course and in her garden.

Gordon Keyden, Consultant (Edinburgh)

G illes G raham , Partner – Casualty (Glasgow)

25 years

After 46 years of service Gordon Keyden retired at the end of April. Gordon was brought up in Kilmacolm, educated at Glenalmond and he completed his law degree at Durham University. He went on to sit his bar exams in London but quickly decided that the City was not for him and in 1976 returned to Scotland, securing a job at Simpson & Marwick.

Siobhan Mullins , Partner – Casualty (Manchester)

Susan Barclay , Paralegal – Casualty (Edinburgh)

Lorraine Callow , Hub Leader – Employment & Pensions (London)

Across more than four decades Gordon built up an impressive practice of many well known insurance and self insured clients. For many years he also acted for clients in occupational disease and later specialised in catastrophic and large loss claims. He took over as Managing Partner of Simpson & Marwick in 2012 and was one of the driving forces behind the merger with Clyde & Co.

We wish Gordon well in his retirement and, as a keen golfer, on the links.

The results of this consultation and the analysis of key data points have led to our team forming a steering committee of influential stakeholders, who have helped us devise a strategy and set out a new vision for the function. Careers project to address this challenge, and to ensure that we are attracting and recruiting the very best talent to Clyde & Co in the UK. At its heart, the strategy not only seeks to take us forward in exciting new directions, but also addresses the natural tension that arises between cost and investing in the future leaders of the firm. Watch the video to hear Jessica Jones, Early Careers Development Manager, discuss how our new strategy addresses the changes to the qualification process for new lawyers. COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the early talent market, particularly within the legal sector. The competition for top talent is fiercer than ever and it’s important that we continue to remain ahead of the curve.

International Women’s Day

On 8 March we celebrated International Women’s Day, an important day around the world where we mark the many achievements of women throughout history and in the present day. It also allows for a collective call to action for the acceleration of gender parity. T his year’s theme was Break the Bias. To mark the day, a number of colleagues across our firm who are involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives were asked to share their views on how we can address the biases that might hold us back. You can watch the film, introduced by Carolena Gordon, on this page. We also held a number of events across the firm, including panel discussion with clients and thought provoking webinars.

In February, the firm welcomed 30 students from less advanataged socioeconomic backgrounds to participate in our programme, Bridge to the City. T his programme is targeted at students who come from underrepresented backgrounds, and offers them their first experience of life in a city firm. We offered a week of workshops and sessions which improve education around employment and tackling the barriers that these students may face in the future. Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. I t aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported by providing schools, universities, and organisations with the opportunity to recognise the many talents and advantages of being neurodivergent. The week also aims to create inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual. We ran a lunch & learn session with Daniel Aherne from Adjust Services. To commemorate this week, the CR&I team, alongside members of the ACED network, created a podcast hosted by ACED co-chair Rosehana Amin with a diverse panel speaking about their views on race equality, their own lived experiences and how we can all take action to make a difference in the workplace.

I t recognises the current struggles faced by the LGBTQIA+ community as well as events throughout history that have shaped society today, like the Stonewall Riots. To celebrate the month, we ran a webinar hosted by Laila El-Metoui, Founder and CEO of Pride in Education and Educating out Racism. Supporting the humanitarian relief effort in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine continues with an unimaginable level of human suffering for those in the country and those that have sought refuge elsewhere.

T he human suffering that comes from war is heart-breaking and we must think first and foremost about a number of our colleagues who come from Ukraine, some of whom have family in the country. As a firm we have been supporting the humanitarian crisis in the country by way of financial support and by offering pro bono help. Over recent weeks we have been raising money to support both the United Nationals Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Through a firmwide donation, donations from our people and match funding we have collectively donated £50,000.

Many of us have also been supporting in other ways, including working with charities such as Refugees At Home, providing pro bono advice and offering translation services for those with immigration queries. We are also assisting one of our existing pro bono partners, Safe Passage, to provide a report on the current gaps in legal and advocacy support for refugees fleeing Ukraine with a view to identifying what more we can do to help.

Thank you to everyone who has already contributed to this impressive amount. If you would still like to donate to the appeal you can do so here:

Russia-Ukraine Hub

New Casualty product A key focus for the UK Casualty practice is to work with clients to use technology to improve their processes and reduce costs. The team has recently worked with key account Aviva to create an online Spinal Injuries Pathways Triage form which has proved highly successful and resulted in new instructions for the firm.

T he Knowledge and Business Development teams have launched a new internal SharePoint site to enable global cross collaboration on legal developments, internal know-how and client initiatives on the crisis in Ukraine.

The client has been very impressed with how efficient and user-friendly the tool is to use and has asked whether we can assist in building other triage forms for the wider practice. Estelle is currently working with Aviva on building a wider TCS triage form. That is in the testing phase of production and will form the basis of a large loss indicators tool that can be rolled out to clients. The tool is very much playing to our strengths and is part of our ongoing suite of products focusing on process automation to save time and costs for our clients. So far, we have seen seven new instructions come in via the triage tool and a total of 21 new instructions through the Pathway to Clydes. That is more than we would have anticipated for this injury type, so is a great start. As the only panel provider taking on Spinal Pathways claims, this is a real win for the practice. If you have any questions, you would like a demo or have a client you think might be interested, please contact Estelle Machell or Becky Scott.

You can access the site here.

The site contains a host of useful information, including a centrally maintained tracker for official sanctions issued in response in the UK, Europe and the US, and other legal developments. It also collates our Business Development information, such as firm articles, other client facing content and a client activity tracker. The firm has also established a Russia-Ukraine Committee. It is essential that all ideas for the publication of external content by the firm, including LinkedIn and other social media posts, are approved centrally so that the wider impact on the firm and our clients is considered. There is a function on the SharePoint site to submit a request for approval. We also hope to collate our internal know-how, so that we can ensure consistent advice as matters develop. Please submit your know-how through the site. We will also be featuring a Q&A on our firm views, as they are established

Partners Becky Scott and Estelle Machell have created an automated triage tool which enables Aviva’s Quantum, Small Large, and TCS teams to identify cases for referral much earlier. Handlers are encouraged to run the tool on receipt of a CNF or letter of claim, medical report or Claims Inspectors report and through a series of questions can identify whether or not they are dealing with a case that falls to be handled under the Spinal Injuries Pathway. An email is sent automatically to the line manager for them to then quickly consider whether the case needs to be referred. Becky said: “The new tool is enabling cases to get to the right people in a more timely way, making the lives of handlers much easier. Not only that but we are also seeing more cases referred to us.”
