Life as a Spectator, Participant, and Coach

him. While Russ and I got into the occasional fight when we were teenagers, we know each other well enough now that we support and encourage each other. We know each other’s buttons and we don’t push them. I was having a conversation with someone the other day about how rare it is to have that kind of friendship as an adult. I’m grateful that my brother is also my best friend. I’m continuing my quest to see every baseball stadium in the nation, so at the end of summer, I’ll be flying to Miami to see stadium No. 22. In addition to visiting the stadium and watching the game, we have plans to see the incredible marine life off the coast. My friend who’s into tropical fish is going to join me, so we’ll get to do some snorkeling while we’re there. It’s going to be a fun trip. Spring is ushering in a couple of other exciting events as well. Evie is performing in her first musical theater show in college this month, and Beth and I will be heading to Utah to watch her. This is an exciting moment for Evie, and we’re looking forward to being there to cheer her on. I know she’s going to be great. Have an awesome April, and until next month,

How is your spring so far? It’s wonderful to be out of the thick of winter, isn’t it? One of the things I most look forward to this time of year, besides playing baseball, is getting to watch major league games. Chances are I’ll have a game on anytime I’m in my office working through paperwork or between patients. I’m excited to see what the A’s have in store for us this season. Last year, they weren’t expected to do anything special, then they went and made it to the postseason. I’m hoping they can run with that momentum and do even better this year. In addition to watching and playing baseball, I’m reprising my role as Russell’s coach this spring. It’s been interesting to see how coaching has changed my perspective of the game. When we run through drills — fly balls, catching grounders, throwing, hitting — I am constantly assessing each player to decide who would do best in each role. This is on top of giving suggestions in the moment to improve my players’ game. It has made me much more aware of form and mechanics, and I’ve been watching major league players more closely as a result. Sharing feedback helps everyone get better. I know when I’m playing, I’m not watching myself, and I hope someone else would tell me if my swing or throw looked off. My brother, Russ, often does that for me. At practice, or even if we’re just playing catch, we notice the other person’s mechanics and tell each other if something is off. It helps to have someone I’ve known my whole life do that for me. Russ and I have been best friends since he was born. We always planned to live in the same place, and my son Russell is named after

RATED E FOR EVERYONE

What Do Ratings Mean, and How Should You Use Them? Despite guidance from ratings systems, it can be difficult for parents to discern what digital content is appropriate for their children. Learn more about ratings guidelines for common entertainment media and how to decipher that information so you can make educated decisions that work for your family. MOVIES: G-rated movies are considered suitable or TV-Y7, and their only distinction is that TV-Y7 has been deemed appropriate for young children ages 7 and older. TV ratings can also have additional descriptors attached to them to explain what kind of content earned the rating. VIDEO GAMES: There are seven video game ratings: Early Childhood (EC), Everyone (E), Everyone 10+ (E10), Teen (T), Mature (M), Adults Only (AO), or Rating Pending (RP).These ratings provide consumers with more information about content. Again, as the age of the intended user increases, content progresses from allowing mild violence or suggestive content to adult themes.

for all ages, whereas PG, PG-13, and R-rated movies are progressively less appropriate for kids because of violence, nudity, and language. Some ratings come with age limits; children who are under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult at R-rated movies. TV SHOWS: Due to laws that limit inappropriate content on public airwaves, TV rating systems follow unique codes. In the U.S., shows that are rated as TV- 14 (content that is suitable for those ages 14 and older) can only air after 5 p.m. Meanwhile, TV-MA (content that is appropriate for mature audiences) can only air between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Most shows airing between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. are rated TV-G or TV-PG. These are similar in content to their movie counterparts. Some television children’s shows will also be rated as TV-Y

When choosing family entertainment, experts suggest using both the rating and the description of the media to make your decision since the rating system may not fully explain media content. For example, studies have found that a PG-13 movie can sometimes have just as much violence as an R-rated movie. Additionally, you may be fine with the content in a T-rated video game for a more developmentally advanced 11-year-old. Once you get past all the combinations of numbers and letters, you as a parent might find that ratings for video games, movies, and TV shows provide helpful information. Couple the ratings with your own research and your own values, and put an end to worrying about what surprises may lurk in your children’s media.

Kalie and Caryn What’s Up With Charcoal Toothpaste?

stains, but professional whitening is your best bet. Using charcoal toothpaste also doesn’t replace your semiannual checkups. Those are crucial for the appearance of your teeth, and more importantly, for the health of your whole mouth. If you have any questions about charcoal toothpaste, we’re happy to talk to you more about it. Just ask! –Kalie and Caryn P.S. Kalie will be on maternity leave starting April 15 and will return at the end of June. Caryn will be treating all patients with her lovely assistant Hailey while Kalie is welcoming twins to her family!

While charcoal toothpaste can take away surface stains, it may not be your best friend for whitening. That’s because it won’t tackle anything underneath the enamel, like deeper tooth stains. For those more severe stains, you need a professional whitening treatment. In addition, part of what makes charcoal good at removing surface stains is its abrasiveness, meaning that brushing with it can strip away enamel. Charcoal toothpaste is not meant to be part of your everyday routine. Besides the risks from its abrasiveness, charcoal toothpaste doesn’t contain fluoride, which is an important substance you get from most toothpastes. Additionally, some people are concerned over whether charcoal toothpaste affects medication because of its absorbent properties. When it comes to whitening your teeth, charcoal toothpaste may help address surface

You may have tried it, or maybe you’ve seen social media posts about the mysterious fad of charcoal toothpaste. As we’ve watched this trend gain popularity all over the country, we wanted to shine a little light and look into how it works. First of all, what is charcoal toothpaste? The toothpaste includes activated charcoal, which is charcoal that’s been heated and exposed to gas so that it “opens up” and becomes porous. The idea is that the activated charcoal helps to clean teeth and remove surface stains. Some people also point to antibacterial and freshening properties as additional benefits of using charcoal toothpaste to clean teeth.

THE GREAT POTATO HOAX

April Fool’s Day inevitably spurs on the pranksters and gagsters among us. Sometimes, though, accidental pranks pull the wool over people’s eyes, as in the case of the Great Potato Hoax of 1895. Joseph Swan, a farmer in Colorado, was only hoping to get people excited about the upcoming street fair, and with the help of photographer Adam Talbot, Swan did just that. Talbot took a photo of one of Swan’s potatoes, enlarged it, cut it out, and posted it on a board that Swan held up for a second photo to make it look as if he was carrying a giant potato on his shoulder.

The doctored photo soon made its way around Colorado and the nation. Eventually, one fan got a copy and sent it to the editors at “Scientific American,” who promptly published the photo of the mammoth potato as real. Upon discovering it was a fake, Scientific American published a letter of error, informing readers of the “gross fraud” that had taken place. Nevertheless, Swan was swamped with calls from folks asking to see the mammoth spud. We’d say the potato had the last laugh.

RUNNING: A LOVE STORY Use Cues to Create a Running Habit

emotional (linked to a mood or emotion), or social (linked to a particular group of people). So if you want to create a running habit, develop prompts that will cue you to engage in it. For example, you can use temporal cues to make a habit of running every day after work, or you can make it a necessary step in your routine: Wake up, brush teeth, coffee, run, shower. Documenting how you feel after a run will help your mind link the good feelings it gives you to the action, which will then cue the habit. Next time your drinking buddies suggest happy hour, suggest a run instead. Maybe they’ll even pick up the habit. Go on now. Let running sweep you off your feet!

Since the ‘70s, devotees have referred to the elusive rush of euphoria they feel during and right after a run as a “runner’s high.” Your friend who claims to “love” running despite how exhausted she looks at the finish line of her 10K might be experiencing the effects of this phenomenon. This post-workout boost has long been linked to a rush of endorphins entering the brain, but a recent study from researchers in Germany suggests that a more likely cause is an increased production of serotonin and other feel-good neurotransmitters. Because of these physiological effects, running may help to improve your body’s ability to stand up to stress while also making you feel good. For seasoned runners, that sweet call of serotonin might be enough to lace up their sneakers week after week, but the rest of us might need a little more convincing. Research into the psychology of habit formation, which has allowed companies like Procter & Gamble to make millions, has found that habits are often linked to a specific cue. Calling on the insight of psychologists, marketing campaigns have used this tactic to sell products like Febreze, and you can use some of the same techniques to adopt a running habit. Most cues fall into one of four categories: temporal (linked to a specific location or time of day), action-based (one of a series of actions),
