This blog is a follow up from our most recent Construction to Production masterclass. Held at the Toyota Deeside Engine Plant, the day was attended by several key leaders from the industry. The blog highlights 7 key lessons to be learnt from the motor manufacturing giant and how these can lead to increased productivity.

Want to boost your margins? Cost-cutting doesn’t work

Common approaches to cutting costs on construction projects are often counterproductive. Business, even when conducted with the best of intentions, is ultimately about making money. That’s why so many firms up and down the construction supply chain are so fixated on the cost of something, but not the value it brings. Lower costs equal higher margins, which means more profit, and a healthier, more successful business.

Let cost take care of itself At BBI Services, we believe that a totally different approach is required. It’s not about obsessively focusing on cost. It’s about rigorously tackling issues around quality, productivity, value and safety – which, if you solve them, mean that cost will take care of itself. When it comes to thinking about cost, we drive the businesses we work with to not just think about the money they spend up front, but really explore, challenge, and streamline all operations in order to drive waste out and embed value right first time, every time.

If you really want to cut costs, think of productivity, quality and health and safety as a triangle, with cost in the middle. Work to get the tangible three aspects right, and costs will automatically be reduced.

Research has identified that productivity in the construction sector has flatlined for 20 years while other sectors have dramatically improved.

First affordable carbon negative homes In partnership with British Gas, St. Modwen Homes have launched the first affordable carbon negative homes. The homes are capable of reducing homeowners’ energy bills by 79% and delivering a 125% reduction in CO2 emissions. British Gas will install the trial homes with the latest Hive Smart Home technology, to aid the energy efficiency of these properties. To find out more click HERE

Industry bodies to draw up standard for verifying net zero buildings A standard for verifying buildings as net zero carbon is currently being developed by a group of industry bodies including RIBA and the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC).

March construction output reaches record heights with 1.7% increase

According to the Office of National Statistics, March was the fifth consecutive monthly growth and a record high. As well as the monthly increase, construction output rose 3.8% in Quarter 1 2022. Outside of the coronavirus pandemic period, this is the strongest Quarterly growth since Quarter 1 2107 (3.9%). To read more click HERE

The UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard is to be a single agreed methodology that will allow developers, architects and building occupiers to prove that the building is net zero. To read the full article click HERE

Quality Management – how can we help?

Quality defects continue to occur throughout projects, and there is a key factor contributing to these – poor quality management. This is backed up by GIRI’s research in identifying the top ten roots causes of error – poor culture in relation to quality. Construction errors cost the UK Construction Industry billons of pounds each year.

Poor quality management ultimately results in the need for reworks to correct the errors made. Whilst these costs the construction industry billions of pounds, and delays project lead times, it also puts construction workers in danger . In Australia, 39% of all injuries on construction projects are down to quality issues. Analysis of quality and safety data from over 500 construction projects found there’s 70% greater probability of being injured while attending to rework.

Collaboration centres around people. It only works when all levels of an organisation work together to achieve a common goal which is usually outlined by the shared vision, mission and values set by each company.

Although this seems straightforward, some organisations don’t always invest the time and resources needed to create, embed, and reinforce a collaborative and challenge friendly culture.

Projects need increased collaboration in order to deliver the various stakeholder outcomes.

At BBI Services, we have experience working with companies to help develop a collaborative culture where every team member feels empowered to achieve a common goal. We have equipped hundreds of individuals with the toolset, skillset, and mindset to deliver quality projects on time and on schedule.
