Pathways to an Open World

The place, the topos , which is in fact an a-topos (an atopia) is that of a concentration of intellectual forces, due one day to break out of the darkness and shed new light on the world. According to the Muslim tradition, it was El Hallaj of Bagdad, he who died with the words ana’l hacq on his lips (‘My identity is creative life’) who was to call the seven sages to their re-awakening. It’s with this image of the Seven Sages and this appeal to ‘creative life’ that I close, provisionally, my part in our symposium, my initial contribution to the Centre for Studies up here in Qatar.
