This tour provides the opportunity to explore Cheshire and North Wales many waterways with visits to illustrate the ingenuity of the19th Century’s canal builders and industrialists, whilst delighting in the wonderful rolling green countryside of the area.

Day 1 Travel to your hotel in Cheshire. Day 2 First stop is the Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre, set in 50 acres in the heart of the Cheshire countryside. Hear about the Shire horse’s contribution to our heritage with up to 30 horses for you to meet (for tours booked during school holidays, an alternative excursion will be oered). Afterwards, travel to charming Chester for a tranquil cruise on the River Dee. Time at leisure then to explore the city. Day 3 Begin the day at the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. The tour highlights how this part of a 200-year-old historic dock, originally designed by Thomas Telford, was a major transhipment point for cargoes travelling between the port of Liverpool and the inland waterway network. You will also learn about the
lives and work of the canal people. On then to the Wirral Peninsula and the award winning Ness Botanic Gardens. Founded in 1898 by Arthur Kilpin Bulley, a cotton merchant with a passion for gardens and plant collecting with lovely views across the Dee estuary to the Welsh mountains. Day 4 A leisurely drive past Ruthin before travelling over the spectacular Horseshoe Pass to Llangollen. Enjoy time at leisure here before a short transfer to Froncysyllte to join a canal cruise on a brightly coloured narrowboat, where you will sail across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, or ‘Stream in the Sky’, then through the beautiful Vale of Llangollen. An interesting commentary gives visitors an insight into the history of the area and other canals in the UK. Day 5 Homeward journey.

Day 1 Travel to your hotel in Lancashire. Day 2 A full day guided tour today of the gem that is the Ribble Valley and its award-winning villages, such as Whalley. A short tour on foot here takes in the history of the settlement dating back 2000 years. Visit Downham, popular with Queen Victoria, location of classic lm ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ and BBC series ‘Born and Bred’, with views of Pendle Hill. Included lunch at the Calf’s Head at Worston before venturing to the Duchy of Lancaster estate, owned by the King, meandering through the picturesque Hodder Valley. Day 3 Travel north for a guided tour of Leighton Hall, the ancestral home of the world-renowned Gillow furniture family. Then to Lancaster, for an included one and three quarter hour Lune Aqueduct cruise. See the Victorian city centre
before heading out into the countryside to the aqueduct. On a clear day, the view from this 100-foot monument will leave you astounded. Depending upon the operator’s schedule (particularly weekends from May to Sept) the cruise may be a 50 minute horse-drawn barge cruise from Barton Grange Garden Centre. Travel back across country, through Abbeysteads and the dramatic Forest of Bowland into Clitheroe before heading back to the hotel. Day 4 A leisurely start to the day for a stop at Oswaldtwistle Mills Shopping Village. Take the opportunity to browse before departing for Bolton and the family run Olympus Fish and Chip Restaurant for a bite of traditional lunch and an afternoon of musicality. Day 5 Homeward journey.
