Orkney and Shetland, two of the most northerly British Isles, are unique and unlike any other region of Great Britain. Their distinctive prehistoric ruins play a key part in their attraction. Orkney boasts some of the best preserved archaeological sites in Europe, including Neolithic villages, burial tombs and impressive stone circles. Shetland has 900 miles of coastline with dramatic clis and beautiful scenery, in addition to the famous indigenous Shetland Ponies, reputed for their strength and hardiness. Both have retained their Scandinavian customs and traditions, following the settlement of the Vikings in the 8th and 9th centuries. Any tour to these islands is further enhanced by the journey north and the wonderful sightseeing opportunities en route. The Northern Isles… Orkney and Shetland
