Mona Vale Hospital’s palliative care unit provides a comfortable transition for patients
Staff from Mona Vale Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit
Mona Vale Hospital’s palliative care is making the transition to a different phase of care much easier for patients. The unit, which opened in February 2021, helps facilitate patients being admitted directly from their home once their condition requires further
treatment, rather than presenting to an emergency department and being admitted through an acute hospital. This not only minimises stress for patients, but it also provides continuity of care and fast symptom relief when required. The unit enables this level of care through a range of different means that are all dependent on the patient and their wishes
Over the past year the unit has admitted 57 per cent of patients directly from their homes into palliative care, which is a significantly higher rate than the NSW average of 16 per cent of patients. The unit’s staff specialist Dr Peter Roach works with patients in the community with HammondCare alongside his role at Mona Vale Hospital to help ensure the smooth transition.
