IMPACT Elevating civics education Enhancing students’ understanding of their civic role Inspiring students to be change agents

Civics education has been an integral part of my life. An Ursuline sister in grammar school, a priest in high school, lay professors at Fordham College and Fordham Law School, led me to opportunities to educate, through talks and writings, citizens of all ages, on subjects of our democracy and constitution. These ranged from speeches on amending the Constitution, a first book on the vice presidents of the United States, and a speech on the independence of the judiciary that became a rallying cry for the New York State Bar Association and its law-related education activities. In 2019, I was encouraged by Fordham University and its Law School to develop a civics agenda. Our Founding Fathers, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, appreciated deeply the importance of civics education as an absolutely essential requirement to a functioning democracy. I am thrilled to be able to dedicate myself to this critical effort and to support the center’s inaugural pilot efforts.
