WE KEEP YOU ON THE RIGHT PATH

IN A MANOR OF SPEAKING

From Borrowed Office Space to a Staten Island Staple 25 Years Later A MILESTONE WORTH TOASTING!

This year, our firm celebrates something that feels both unbelievable and deeply meaningful: 25 years of practicing law side by side on Staten Island. When we first opened our doors, we had nothing more than a shared vision, borrowed office space, and a genuine desire to serve our community with honesty, warmth, and skill. We didn’t yet have a building of our own, but we had determination, friendship, and a belief that we could create something meaningful together.

Over the years, that belief has grown into a firm we’re incredibly proud of. When we purchased our own building in 2016, it felt like a turning point, like a physical symbol of the stability, trust, and longevity we had worked so hard to build. We wanted a space that felt welcoming rather than intimidating, a place where clients could walk in with their biggest worries and leave feeling supported, informed, and cared for. That approach has shaped every corner of the office, from the friendly greeting at the front desk to the nearly endless supply of candy that has mysteriously multiplied under John’s watch. What has changed most dramatically since our early days, though, is the world around us. When we first launched the firm, we were armed with little more than a fax machine, some bulky office equipment, and a set of floppy disks. Today, it takes a full digital ecosystem: websites, social media, newsletters, secure communication platforms, all just to stay visible and accessible. In the legal world, change

is constant, and we’ve embraced this challenge by continually updating our systems and processes to better serve our clients. But through all the growth and modernization, we have stayed committed to a core principle: people first, always. That focus has earned us something more valuable than any award. It’s earned us trust. The kind of trust that only comes from showing up for people again and again, with compassion, clarity, and genuine care. We’ve helped clients buy their first homes, plan for their families, and protect their legacies. We’ve watched children grow up, move out, and return as clients themselves. That generational continuity is one of the greatest honors of our careers.

If you haven’t spotted it yet, our brand-new billboard is up and shining proudly by the Outerbridge Crossing! Next time you’re in the area, keep an eye out and give us a wave. We’re excited to share this milestone with our clients, neighbors, and friends who made 25 years possible.

We wouldn’t be here without the remarkable people who work alongside us. Many of our staff

The Chair Makes the Room

Designing a new room often ends with a task that can be the most enjoyable of all: choosing the right accent chair. This piece may serve various purposes, like providing extra seating, adding a pop of color, or creating a contrasting design. Making the right choice requires finding a balance between form and function.

A lounge chair invites users to kick back and enjoy. An armchair with comfy armrests suggests good conversation. For a smaller space, a side chair with a straight back and skinny legs works best. In choosing a design, feel free to bend a few rules by departing a little from your theme, such as adding a side chair with solid wood legs to a streamlined Danish modern theme. Now, with an accent chair that perfectly defines your living space, sit back and enjoy!

Breakfast, school, work, dinner, rinse, and repeat.

Busy weeknights often leave little room for quality family time. However, with a bit of creativity and intentionality, you can transform even the most hectic evenings into memorable bonding moments. Here are seven engaging, low-prep activities that fit seamlessly into your evening routine. Screen-Free Time After Dinner Designate a window of 30–45 minutes after dinner as a screen-free time for the entire family. This intentional time allows for uninterrupted conversations, taking a walk, playing a favorite sport outside, or enjoying each other’s company without digital distractions. You can even create a “screen bucket/basket” for everyone’s phone or tablet during this designated time.

Elder Law Planning Can’t Wait HOW ELDER LAW SAFEGUARDS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES

Empower loved ones to make decisions.

As we grow older, planning for the future becomes less about possessions and more about peace of mind. Unfortunately, families now face new challenges, including rising long-term care costs and navigating complex health care and Medicaid regulations. That’s where elder law makes all the difference. It bridges the gap between traditional estate planning and the real-world needs that come with aging. Develop a long-term care strategy. Few things can drain savings faster than the cost of long-term care. Nursing homes and assisted living communities can cost thousands each month, placing tremendous strain on families. With the right guidance, you can prepare for these expenses without sacrificing everything you’ve worked hard to build. An elder law attorney can help you develop a proactive strategy that may include establishing trusts, setting aside funds for home care, and preserving assets for a spouse or dependents. Early planning gives you more control over your options and the comfort of knowing your future care won’t jeopardize your family’s financial stability.

Life can change unexpectedly. If illness or incapacity strikes, having clear legal documents in place allows someone you trust to step in smoothly.

Tools like a durable power of attorney, health care proxy, and living will empower your loved ones to act on your behalf without delay or confusion. These safeguards prevent the emotional and financial strain of court proceedings, providing your family with the clarity they need during difficult times. Start planning today. Elder law is about protecting people, not just assets. At Merlino & Gonzalez, we take a caring, comprehensive approach to help you plan for every possibility. Together, we’ll build a plan that safeguards your independence, honors your values, and supports your loved ones for years to come.

Start the conversation today, and your future self will thank you.

members have been with us for more than a decade, and some nearly as long as we’ve been open. Michele, who has been with us for 23 years, is practically part of the firm’s DNA. Erin has been with us for 15 years and is the steward of our title company. Stephanie and Karen have each been with us for six years and, from the beginning, have seamlessly become a valued part of our M&G family. Their loyalty, expertise, and kindness have shaped the culture of the firm just as much as we have. And we owe a tremendous thank you to our wives, Nicole and Joanne, and our families, who have supported our long hours, unpredictable schedules, and deep commitment to this work. Reaching 25 years doesn’t just make us proud, it makes us grateful. Grateful for the clients who have trusted us with some of the biggest decisions of their lives. Grateful for the friendships we’ve made along the way. Grateful for the chance to do work that matters every single day. As we celebrate this milestone, we take a moment to reflect on everything that has brought us here and look ahead with excitement. We’re still energized, still passionate, and still committed to serving our community with the same heart and dedication that started it all.
