Budding Stars:The Greyton Young Roses I n this edition of Sporting Corner, we highlight the
debut for the Roses, while Casper Maphosa and Eugene Cedrass were both 17 when they played their first games. “Junior, Casper and Eugene have been playing with us for the past few years and are now part of the future of the Greyton Roses. I hope some of the new youngsters will also follow that path.” One parent, who is delighted with the addition of junior soccer in Greyton, told the Greyton Post: “Trevor’s soccer practice on Wednesdays at the field have been an absolute fantastic opportunity for my son to compete in the team sport, get some

Newcomers are taught the basics of the game, with an emphasis on balance, coordination, co-operation and ultimately ball mastery. They practice their skills in a fun environment from 3pm to 4pm every week before the Young Roses hone their abilities during technical and team building exercises, from 4:15pm to 5:30pm. “The response from the players and parents has been fantastic,” explained the coach. “Both groups have grown very quickly from when we started and we now have 12 Rose Buds and 30 Young Roses. The Rose Buds were a much more recent addition, with one of the parents actually creating the group. “We also have a mix of both boys and girls, and they complement each other very well, but we would love to create an all girls team in the future to compete with other teams in the area. “Unfortunately there is no local league, but we try to play friendly matches when we can. “Ultimately our goal is to create a safe and fun environment for the kids to grow, and if they decide they want to pursue a career in football, they are able to go on to join the Greyton Roses Football Club. We have an under 14 and under 16
team as well as a senior team competing in the fourth highest league in the country.” Three talented Greyton youngsters have already made their way from the junior ranks to compete for the senior team. Junior Du Preez was 15 years- old when he made his senior
