HOME & COTTAGE
THE FAMILY ROOM Words by Jacqui Chaisson
Comfort First
A family room should be comfortable. Choose furnishings that are comfortable and cosy - big deep sofas with lots of room for the entire family. Sectionals are a wonderful choice for family rooms and they are available in an endless choice of fabrics, styles and colours.
Warm It Up
Nothing warms up a space better than a fireplace or wood stove. Even though we can't accomadate natural gas fireplaces on the island, propane is a great alternative that delivers a cosy, even heat source that will drive away the worst chill of winter. A wood stove does the same job and fits into any space with ease. Many use wood pellets and are a clean-burning option.
Storage
Every family room should include an abundance of storage. Shelves and built-ins for games, toys, books, family pictures and movie and game collections. Designate lower storage for the youngest members of the family for easy access. Using a combination of open shelves and cupboards will ensure your family room stays organized.
Light It Up Right
Plan for different types of lighting - task lighting for reading nooks, recess lights on dimmers for ambiance lighting and spot lighting to highlight collections and artwork.
