cause o f some complaints that had come in from the ranchers in that area. He asked me if I’d like to go along. Naturally, I fell for his sug gestion, and so shortly we were on our way. He didn’t seem like the Tom I’d known in days gone by. He acted somewhat nervous. I knew something was troubling him, and I hesitated to bring up the subject, hoping he’d tell me of his own ac cord. W e ’d been riding for two or three hours and he kept looking back every once in a while. It both ered me. He started shooting into the area from where the shots were coming, although we saw signs of no one. About the time he had emptied his gun, a bullet hit him in the shoulder just above his chest on the left side. It knocked him from his horse. Another bullet whistled past m y ear, no doubt intended fo r m y head. Automatically I fell from m y horse like dead. I lay there real quiet and I think Tom thought I was done for.
