to the direction of the North Star. Unless a compass is true, it is not only useless but dangerous. The prophets in the Old Testament were like com passes in that they were supposed to point in the right direction even when the people were going in the wrong direction. Jehoshaphat was a much better king than Ahab, and before going to battle, he insisted that the people ask the Lord’s advice. King Ahab gathered together about 400 prophets and asked them about going to battle. We read, “ . . . And they said, Go up; for the L o r d shall deliver it into the hand of the king” (1 King 22:6). I am going to move four of the compasses close together. As I do, they no longer point toward the north. Each one is false. When they are close together and not telling the truth, they remind us of the false prophets about whom I have been telling you. Jehoshaphat thought that the ad vice of these prophets sounded doubt ful, so he said, “ . . . Is there not here a prophet of the L o r d besides, that we might enquire of him?” (v. 7.) He would rather have one prophet who was true than 400 who were false. Ahab answered, “ . . . There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the L o r d : but I hate him; for he doth not proph esy good concerning me, but evil . . (v. 8). To please Jehoshaphat, Ahab com manded Micaiah to be brought, but

sinner’s, evil, deeds.” Color the flaps black.) LESSON: Down the center of this black piece of paper we see the sin “greed” written. This is a terrible sin and was found in the life of King Ahab. It means to eagerly desire something that belongs to another. King Ahab wanted the vineyard which belonged to a man by the name of Naboth who refused to sell it. He went home and pouted about the matter, refusing to eat or drink. His wicked wife, Jezebel, took matters

into her own hands and through false witnesses had Naboth condemned and stoned to death. She then told her wicked husband to go and take the vineyard. We see in this lesson the terrible effects of greed or covetousness when we realize that a man was murdered to satisfy Ahab’s sinful desires. When we open the flaps on this paper we shall see what happened. We read, “ God uncovers sinner’s evil deeds.” This is exactly what hap pened then and it is what happens in the day in which we now live. The wicked king went, as his wife sug gested, to take the vineyard. “ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it” (1 Kings 21:16). In verses 17 to 19 we are told what happened. “ And the word of the L o r d came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it. And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the L o r d , Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? . . . In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.” In Numbers 32:23 we read, “ . . . be sure your sin will find you out.” July 28, 1957 F e w a n d T r u e OBJECTS: Five compasses. when he prophesied failure for them in battle, Ahab ordered him put in jail. You notice no matter where I take this one compass, it still points toward the north. It was better for this true prophet to remain true and to be put in jail than to have joined with the false prophets in saying what the king wanted to hear. If we read the rest of the story, we find that it was just as the true prophet said it would be — they were defeated. Men often use liars but God never does; He uses only those who are willing to tell the truth no matter how much it may cost them to be true. END.
