Optical Connections Industry Focus 2022-2023

AS IT HAPPENED ECOC 2022

Michael Lebby was joined by ECOC TV to dish out a carefully curated selection of categories to deserving winners. The delights of Basel’s old town weren’t enough to keep exhibitors, delegates, and attendees away from the comparatively modern Messe building across the city on a fresh and sunny Swiss morning. Whether it was the ECOC Exhibition Industry Awards, the on-stand demonstrations from the industry’s leading countries, or the desire to secure a seat before another packed-out day at the Market Focus and Product Focus theatres, the exhibition hall welcomed another wave of keen optical industry. However, that wasn’t the only action happening in the Product Focus theatre for the day. The FTTH Council Europe commenced the morning’s schedule before the awards ceremony with a topical talk on the ‘state of play of FTTH roll out in Europe’, while the rest of the morning and afternoon saw presentations from EXFO, Semtech Corporation, Meta Inc. with a talk on the Telecom Infra Project, and Cognifiber. STANDING ROOM ONLY The popularity of Market Focus across Tuesday’s sessions was such that some attendees were standing at the back of the theatre to catch the speakers and topics of interest up on stage. Varying perspectives on pluggables populated much of the day’s schedule – talks on ‘Standardised Pluggable v Proprietary Multi-haul’, ‘Evolving to CPO or advancing pluggables’, and ‘Opportunities for coherent pluggables beyond DCI’ came from Acacia, (now part of Cisco), Cignal AI, and Omdia, respectively. Other presentations came from Infinera on pushing coherent to the edge, Effect Photonics on addressing the edge computing and data centre infrastructure market, and OIF with a talk titled CMIS – Management control Optical Modules.

Lots of interest in the Product Focus Theatre.

THE LAST LAP On the last day of the show, attendees shared a farewell drink on each other’s booths, exchanged cards with new contacts, and celebrated the past three days of this year’s ECOC Exhibition. Every corner of the exhibition space has seen plenty of action over the past three days – the Market Focus theatre was frequently at capacity, sounds of applause from Product Focus could be heard across the hall in appreciation of the technological innovation on show, and demonstrations and meetings at the exhibitor booths contributed to the noticeable buzz at ECOC Exhibition 2022. The winner of two awards at Tuesday’s Exhibition Awards ceremony Source Photonics, kicked off the final day of Market Focus sessions with a presentation titled ‘New optics for 5G and beyond.’ Following presentations came from Coherent, Marvell and OIF with a common theme of optical connectivity and evolution. Into the afternoon, discussions ranged from the future of satellite connectivity, what the future looks like for apps beyond headsets, to new standards

in the automotive world. Featuring talks from Dirk Götzl from Huber + Suhner, Cubeoptics AG, and Mark Lutkowitz from fibeReality, the final sessions of ECOC Exhibition ended on a diverse high. The final Product Focus sessions were divided between EPIC TechWatch and Yamaichi Electronics. Contributions to EPIC’s talks kept the audience engaged and receptive, with a talk from Francisco Rodrigues, CEO at PICadvanced, bringing EPIC’s slot a close on the topic of ‘Photonic Integration Based Devices for Tuneable and Next Generation Networks Speaker.’ David Binder, Business Development Manager of Yamaichi Electronics wrapped up the year’s Product Focus sessions by discussing the ins and outs of the optical module. For anyone who was unable to attend this year’s event, highlights are available on the ECOC website here. The ECOC Exhibition organisers would like to thank all of the sponsors, exhibitors, attendees and event staff for their participation and support for making Basel 2022 a successful event. We can’t wait to see you again next year.
