WestRock To Close Plants, Lay Off Workers In Four States

Atlanta, Georgia based WestRock will be laying off work- ers and closing operations in Kentucky, Minnesota, Illinois and New York, according to company officials and local media reports. Two operations will close in Louisville, Kentucky by the end of January 2024. Employees will be offered sever- ance packages and will be apply for positions elsewhere in the company. WestRock plans to permanently close its facility in Frid- ley, Minnesota, affecting some 70 employees. A plant closure in Chicago will result in 73 employees being laid off beginning at the end of November. The permanent closure of WestRock's plant in Pat- chogue, New York, will affect 70 employees who will be laid off in January. In other news reported last month, WestRock and Smurfit Kappa announced the signing of a business com- bination agreement that would create Smurfit WestRock, making it the largest global packaging partner by revenue. The CEO of Smurfit WestRock will be Tony Smurfit. The Boards of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock believe the combination will give them unparalleled geographic reach across 42 countries with a significant presence across both Europe and the Americas.
