Nothing’s more rewarding
Stuckey’s memory of Stuckey’s was nostalgic. She was just a kid in the ‘60s and ‘70s when the roadside oasis op- erated in 368 stores in more than 30 states. There was a manufacturing facility where the famous pecan candy and log rolls were made. There were more than 4,000 Stuck- ey’s billboards splashed across the nation’s highways. “That’s what I remembered. That’s what I thought I was buying,” she said. That wasn’t the reality, though. Only 13 of the 368 stores, once a popular respite on family road trips, were still in operation. Most were long shuttered or inhabited by a not-so-wholesome establishment. All the candy mak- ing was outsourced, much of the inventory was dated and caked in dust, plus the company was six figures in debt.
