The Summerside store’s extensive offerings show how McKenna has put this belief into practice. Customers will find a curated collection of vintage and new items–from furnishings and textiles to housewares, mirrors, lighting, wallpaper, paint and more– along with all of the advice and guidance needed to create a space that reflects their unique values through pieces rich with stories. To facilitate design discussions with clients, McKenna recently opened a design centre alongside her shop. “I wanted to provide a comfortable space to view our textile, wallpaper and lighting libraries. We are also pleased to offer Farrow & Ball paints,” she notes. “We are one of only two stockists in Atlantic Canada and the only one east of Québec that can do in-can tinting, making the full range of Farrow & Ball colours available in minutes.” McKenna brings to her store a literal lifetime of experience in the design business. From her days getting off the school bus to join her mom at McKenna’s Furniture in O’Leary to her time running the store in Summerside with her siblings, she learned firsthand how to work with clients and assist them with their design plans and decisions. She later moved on to Mydoma Studio, a business management software for interior designers. “My role of COO provided me with an amazing exposure to the interior design industry on a more global level,” she notes.

a unique offering in the home décor space: a design-led furniture and décor shop where pieces are chosen for their quality, sustainability and ability to inspire. “Quality furniture is inherently sustainable,” she explains. “But buying furniture has become increasingly confusing as price alone is no longer a good indicator of quality. I rely on the experience I’ve gained over the years to look for the components and construction features that make a piece long-lasting.” “I also believe that quality does not need to come at the sacrifice of aesthetics so I choose pieces that are as beautiful as they are long-lasting,” she states. McKenna partners with artisans and vendors who share her commitment to well-made goods. While she always looks locally, her search extends across North America and to Europe where she sources unique, well-made home décor items that are often hard to find elsewhere on the Island. Beyond the physical items she stocks in her store, McKenna also hopes Maud Home will inspire people to think differently about how they shop for key pieces for their home. “You don’t need to rush into filling the space completely at once,” she says. “Collecting over time and being thoughtful about the space will create a more inviting and interesting space. We are here and happy to help you with your selections.”
