Growing Together With You

More Than Money: Leaving Your Heirs a Legacy of the Heart

Many of you already have a will. If you don’t, Estate Planning Awareness Week, which falls on the third week of October, is a good time to get to work on one.

grandkids, and the “why” behind your gifts. It can be a page of writing, a voice memo, or a short video you record on your phone. The goal is warmth and clarity. I promise we won’t lawyer it up. Pick Your Format Choose the medium that feels most natural to you. I prefer letters, but everyone is different. If video is your thing, hit “Record” and make a three-minute message. If you are feeling crazy, do both. Or, pick and choose — maybe a letter to the kids and a video to each grandchild.

Please call Claudia at our office today and get that appointment on the calendar! Do you have a friend without a will? Have them call Claudia, too. We don’t want her getting lonely! And if you already have a will, I want you to think about adding an element that many people really enjoy: Consider writing a short “Legacy Love Letter” to go with your will or trust! A Legacy Love Letter is not a legal document. It is a keepsake that

How to Start Here are a few ideas for topics that can help you get started.

• A lesson you learned the hard way and how it changed you. • A time you felt proud of the family, and why. • A tradition you want to keep alive and how to do it. • A personal hope you have for each child or grandchild. • What money means to you and the values behind your gifts. • A recipe, song, or place that carries a family memory. For more inspiration, search “ethical will” or “legacy letter” online and browse a few examples. AARP’s guidance is friendly and practical. A Simple Template You Can Steal Start with: “To my family, I am grateful for ...” Add a paragraph on a lesson you want others to remember. Add another paragraph describing a tradition to continue and who might lead it. Close with a blessing or encouragement, with information about where to find important documents. If video is easier, use the same outline to organize your thoughts as you speak into your phone.

How Our Guest Services Specialist Brings Calm to Troubled Callers

MEET THE TEAM

Among the thousands of calls Daysi Acuna has taken from prospective clients since she joined Dellutri Law Group two years ago, she remembers one in particular. The caller had lost her job after the pandemic, then Hurricane Ian destroyed her house, and after that, she got sick. “It was one thing after another,” Daysi recalls. To that woman, calling our firm to ask about filing bankruptcy felt like another failure. “This isn’t your fault at all!” Daysi told the woman. “She did cry a bit, and we took a moment. I told her, ‘Don’t be hard on yourself.’” Daysi reassured her that Carmen would help her find a way out. Comforted, the woman set up an appointment. It’s all in a day’s work for our guest services specialist. Daysi Acuna is one of the first voices our callers hear. Empathetic by nature, she has a smile in her voice and a willingness to listen and care about people. Upbeat, dedicated, and hardworking, she has done a fantastic job on the switchboard.

training and supervisory roles. As she fielded calls from Medicare patients who were often struggling, she strived to help them feel better, she says. “I had to be creative sometimes to at least make them happy during that one call.” When Carmen interviewed her for her current job, they connected very well, Daysi recalls. “I am a very talkative person, he is a very talkative person,” she says. She was too nervous to remember any of Carmen’s out-of-the-box interview questions, but she does remember his “very colorful, very Floridian shirt,” she says. “He is charismatic, and that’s one of the first things people notice about him.” Daysi’s understanding of the health care system, coupled with her flawless Spanish, enable her to put all our prospective new clients at ease. “I am glad to be one of the first ones to talk to them and help them with their troubles,” she says. “I feel proud because I know how Carmen works. In my mind I am thinking, ‘We can totally help you. You will be fine.’”

In a previous job for a large health insurer, Daysi started as a customer-service representative and was soon promoted to

Many people see filing bankruptcy as a dead end. They imagine their credit score stuck in the basement, their hopes of buying a house destroyed, and their financial reputation ruined. In fact, bankruptcy can be a stepping stone — the beginning of a journey toward a respectable credit score, renewed access to credit, and a bright financial future. The outcome rests on the steps you take after the bankruptcy process is completed. Carmen has helped tens of thousands of clients file and complete the bankruptcy process, and he has been inspired by watching them rebuild and move forward afterward. In his new book, “From the Ground Up,” he explains all the tools you will need to turn bankruptcy into a fresh start, and he explains clearly, step by step, how to use them. From the Ground Up REBUILD YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE AFTER BANKRUPTCY

• A Home Safe: Use a fire-resistant, water-resistant safe and label a folder “Estate Plan + Legacy Letter.” Keep inside a copy of your will, powers of attorney, health care directives, and the letter. • Safety Deposit Box: Works for originals, but access can be limited outside banking hours. Do not lock away the only copy of documents people may need quickly. • Digital Backup: Save a PDF in your password manager or cloud drive, and tell your fiduciary how to access it. Avoid hiding it in an email draft no one knows about. Make it a tradition to update your letter each October. Add a paragraph about something you learned that year, or a story that deserves retelling. If you prefer speaking over writing, record a fresh two-minute audio note and save it next to last year’s version. The point of a Legacy Love Letter is rhythm and heart, not perfection. If you are one of those people who says, “I don’t know where to start or what to say,” don’t worry. No one is going to judge your work.

In this book, you will learn:

• How to dispute and correct inevitable errors on your credit report. • How to use secured credit cards and credit builder loans to build a positive credit history. • When to apply for a car loan. • The best path to home ownership. • How to set up and stick to a budget. • How to build a long-term financial plan. Carmen recounts real-life examples of consumers who emerged successfully from bankruptcy by using the tools he describes. He also offers entertaining examples from the economy at large. Did you know, for example, that Walt Disney’s first animation studio had to file for bankruptcy? Talk about a rebound!

Remember, by the time they read this, you will not be around!

CLERGY, CANDY, AND CRIMINAL CODES Surprising Southern Halloween Laws

Depending on where you live, Halloween is either a holiday for spooky fun or a one-way ticket to the wrong side of the law. Surprisingly, certain parts of the country have Halloween-related laws regulating everything from who can wear a mask to whom you’re allowed to make laugh. Here are a few obscure-but-true laws in the South that, if broken, are scarier than any haunted hayride. The Great Mustachioed Priest Menace If you’re a Halloween reveler in Alabama, be careful with your costume choice. God and the law are watching. Dressing up like a priest, rabbi, nun, or other clergy member on Oct. 31 or any other day

prompting attendees to burst out laughing is bad form, which is why the state prohibits anyone from wearing a fake mustache in church to elicit a chuckle. Was this practice really widespread enough to inspire an actual law? While the law’s historical origins are unclear, it demonstrates the state’s commitment to religious faith and willingness to fine anyone who attempts to mock it. The Decriminalized Children of Dublin Dublin, Georgia, has an odd and, depending on your age, totally fun legal perspective concerning facial coverings. Although the city’s rules were loosened temporarily at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, municipal laws prohibit people from “wearing a mask, hood, or other apparel or regalia in such manner as to conceal [their] identity, or in such manner that [their] face is not fully visible, or in such manner that [they] may not be recognized.” However, Dublin makes an annual exception for children under the age of 16 who “may be garbed in the usual or customary children’s Halloween costumes.” While parents or older siblings will face a misdemeanor charge if they’re caught wearing a mask while accompanying their little ones trick-or-treating, at least children in Dublin won’t be deemed juvenile criminals for covering their faces while on the hunt for neighborhood candy.

of the year could cost you a fine of up to $500 or up to a year behind bars. The law was established to show respect to religious institutions by discouraging citizens from impersonating faith leaders.

Additionally, Alabama’s focus on maintaining a sense of decorum in religious practices extends to what citizens do in the presence of actual priests. Naturally, disrupting services by
