Trust Your Dad

Scripture:
2 Timothy 2:15
W hen it comes to cars and figuring out what’s wrong with them, there is no one I would trust more than my dad. How was it that he was so good at diagnosing problems in an engine? The answer is sim- ple, for years he studied cars and repair manuals and spent the time to find out how a par- ticular engine ran the best. He had such a passion for excel- lence that his favorite saying to me when I was trying to get something done on a car was; “son if you don’t have time to do the job, don’t do the job at all.” Dad has gone on to be with the Lord and can no longer help me with cars, but many of the principles he taught me apply to our spiritual lives as well. Second Timothy 2:15 says: “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman who needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” In this pas- sage, Paul is encouraging his young understudy to decide upon applied discipline and intellect in his faith so that he will be able to correctly use the Bible to help others. For me, this Bible passage has really challenged me all my life since becoming a Christian at the age of 16. When it comes to street rods and engines some dabble and some dive in, some are car show
fanatics, and some are car show enthusiasts. When it comes to our faith, it is similar. Some folks just want to dabble with God, usually just when times are hard and they need help after they have messed things up. (I have been in this camp from time to time.) This kind of faith really isn’t much more beneficial than being a mechanic who doesn’t study, doesn’t practice, and just hopes he figures out the problem when the car breaks down. What God desires out of us is that we choose to put him first. That we spend time studying the manual he has given us for life called the Bible so that we are prepared in advance when prob- lems come. And not just the problems in our lives, but also for the lives of those we love around us, our families and our friends. We should study in such a way that we can be the ones that others come to in their questions of life and faith when they cannot find the answers on their own. So if you don’t have a Bible, go grab one and start reading today. After all, it’s the number one best seller in the history of the world. If you do have a Bible, don’t let it gather dust, dig in and study so that others will come to you and you can help them figure out what the misfire is in their engine.
