NSRA is all about safety and we have a National Safety Director, Regional Directors, State Safety Inspectors and hundreds of Safety Team Members throughout the country. We perform thousands of Safety Inspections, awarding Safety 23 stickers to those with all 23 safety items checked off. That’s a lot of dedication towards safe- ty, but as mentioned earlier, NSRA is all about safety. Occasionally, in our haste, we may have a tem- porary lapse of judgment and forget about safety when we all know better! I was recently perform- ing a safety inspection on a hi-boy coupe with sprint car-style headers. The owner had driven the car to the event and had recently parked, so I knew those headers were hot! The steering shaft ran under the headers, so I reached through to check the u-joints. I’m not sure what I was think- ing, perhaps it was a challenge and I was in a high-stakes game of Operation. I know you’ve heard it before, maybe from your
parents, your spouse, some wise old gentleman, your insurance agent, or even someone on your safety team, BE CAREFUL! Don’t take any unneces- sary risks. You guessed it, I touched one of those hot pipes with the inside of my arm. Luckily this time it was only a second-degree burn, and a very painful but valuable lesson learned. It could have been a lot worse, so this is just a reminder, whether you are working on your car or performing a safety inspec- tion, don’t cut any corners or take any unnecessary risks. Think about what you are doing and if there would be negative consequences should you choose to take careless short cuts. While my children were growing up my wife would tell them, “Be careful, we don’t have time to go to the hospital.” She often reminds me of the same thing.
