My Children Found Their Own Paths Unexpected Lessons of Bringing My Kids Into the Clinic

Most parents have taken their kids to work, but how many have actually had the opportunity to work with them? The fourth Thursday in April is Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, and both my son and daughter, Kaden and Macy, have clocked in their hours here at the clinic! While it's been an opportunity for real, hands-on learning and growth, each of them has their own unique aspirations for the future. Kaden, now a sophomore at the University of Utah pursuing business management, and Macy, a high school senior with her sights set on either FBI counterterrorism or pre-med at the same college, have both contributed significantly to our clinic's operations. Despite their active involvement in the clinic, it's clear their passions lie elsewhere. Kaden's affinity for snowboarding and Macy's love for skiing have found a perfect backdrop in Utah, and while they both cherish their independence, the sibling bond remains a silent thread of comfort in their adventurous college pursuits. Having them in the clinic was an eye-opening experience for both sides. The first thing they said after seeing me at work was, “Dad is way nicer to patients!” While they are definitely opinionated, they were still professional in their roles as PT techs. Their duties varied from assisting patients to creating exercise videos that patients often recognized them in. Ultimately, it’s a fascinating experience as a parent to see your kids work, and I bet it’s the same way for them!

Working alongside Kaden and Macy revealed facets of their personalities that filled me with pride. Their respectfulness, attentiveness, and

willingness to dive into tasks with enthusiasm showed me that our parenting — instilling values of hard work,

communication, and respect — had indeed

paid off. It was exciting to see them navigate the clinic

independently, displaying skills and traits that assured me of their future success, no matter what career path they choose. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my daughter even volunteered to help out at my wife’s dental office to perform COVID-19 screenings. Her rapid transition from screening to filing and equipment sterilization was impressive, and she always went above and beyond what was asked of her. Similarly, Kaden's seamless adaptation to assisting at the front desk when needed was a testament to his flexibility and willingness to tackle new challenges. Observing my children engage with patients, guide them through exercises, and maintain meaningful conversations was a heartwarming experience. Their ability

to communicate effectively, make eye contact, and actively participate in the work environment revealed their maturity and readiness for the professional world. While neither Kaden nor Macy plans to follow in my footsteps to physical therapy, the lessons they've learned and the experiences they've gained in the clinic will undoubtedly serve them well in their future endeavors. I look forward to seeing where their paths lead, knowing their time in the clinic has contributed to their growth in ways that will benefit them for years to come. I am confident they will make a meaningful impact, and I couldn't be prouder.

consistent. Whether it’s rock climbing, hiking, cycling, Zumba, or aerobics, you need to find engaging activities that you love. This will increase the likelihood of long-term commitment as the exercise is something you want to do. 4. Enlist a Workout Buddy Journeys are more enjoyable when shared. Find a workout buddy who shares similar fitness goals and schedules. Exercising with a friend will establish accountability and bring a fun social element that encourages staying on track. 5. Be Kind to Yourself Understand that setbacks are natural. If you miss a workout or face setbacks in your fitness journey, that’s okay! Be kind to yourself and avoid self-criticism to just focus on recommitting to your routine. Consistency is built over time, and resilience is crucial in maintaining it. You can’t be resilient without assuring yourself that you can do it despite the challenges.
