This study investigates the potential use of banana pseudo stem biomass (BPSB) for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine b (Rh B) from the aqueous solutions. To increase the adsorption capacity, base modified BPSB has been used. The base modification was done using NaOH and KOH. Under the characterization of BPSB, the structural changes and chemical changes of the surface were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and fourier transform infra-red spectroscope (FT-IR). According to the FT-IR analysis, hydroxyl groups present on the unmodified BPSB has been shifted after the adsorption of dyes. A series of batch experiments were carried out to study the effect of base concentration, dye concentration, pH of the medium, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and contact time. MB shows the highest adsorption capacity at pH 6 for 1500ppm solution. Rh B shows the highest adsorption capacity at pH 5 for a 120ppm solution. Experimental data were analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. In all the studies, adsorption kinetic data were fitted to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Therefore, chemisorption takes place between the adsorbent and adsorbate. The present study oblique that BMBPSB can be used as an efficient, low-cost alternative for the removal of MB and Rh B dyes.
