HAOMT E Gates magically open on weekdays at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm to the Gor- don B. Kaufmann designed Mediterranean-style villa on North Carol- wood Drive in Holmby Hills. In 1982, Frederick R. Weisman purchased the Los Angeles estate to serve as a showcase for his personal collec- tion of 20th-century art. An astonishing array of nearly every artist of significance in the modern and contemporary art world greets guests inside . . . and that’s in the foyer alone. He and his wife, Billie Milam Weisman, an art conservator and curator, worked together to create a unique environment where the Foundation seeks to preserve, collect, and make the collection publicly accessible as a means to strengthen and contribute to the greater artistic and intel- lectual life. Visitors will encounter everything from Rothkos to neo-realist statuary from Duane Hanson. A nonchalant docent relays all information with precision and can match the expertise of the finest curator in fielding questions about the history of the Weisman’s passions behind collecting. At the end of the tour, she reminds of guests of the subtle differences between Weisman’s collec- tion and Sunnylands where the Annenbergs had donated their impres- sionist works to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to be replaced by dig- ital copies. “Unlike in the desert, everything here is the real thing,” she quips. “Including the . . .” To discover the answer, you’ll just have to visit.
