A Look Back at Our 2022 Veterans Day Event! It Was a Success!
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Somewhere along the way, we must learn that there is nothing greater than to do something for others.” This past Veterans Day, we had the opportunity to serve veterans in our community by hosting an exciting and successful day of free cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, and other necessary dental services to those who served our country. In addition to performing these services, a team member and her boyfriend were kind enough to purchase several free savings plans (totaling $885) for us to raffle off for three lucky veterans to use throughout the new year. By the end of the day, we served 56 individuals and totaled $37,446 in pro bono work. One of our favorite sub shops, Jersey Mike's on Dual Highway, also made the day much more exciting by contributing 80 free sub tickets to distribute during the event! To say we are humbled, thrilled, and pleased with the turnout is an understatement — we are honored to have done
our part in paying it forward to those who gave so much to serve our country and risked their lives with great bravery and valor.
Looking back on 2022, we had a great year in the office. We love building relationships with our patients and continuing to see the same smiling faces while welcoming new ones to the Hagerstown Smiles family. As our team continues to grow, rest assured your care is our top priority! In addition to our Veterans Day event, we assisted one of our hygienists in supporting her family’s needs with the war in Ukraine and helped one of our assistants in her battle
with breast cancer. We are a team and a family and are proud to stand together!
As we move into 2023, we remain committed to our office’s vision and purpose. We plan to continue to have fun and stress positivity by maintaining a positive mental attitude in all that we do. We strive to put our patients’ needs first so we can achieve the best dental office around. Our vision is to develop the most inclusive, highly trained, and empowered team, using God-given talents to enrich, bless, and serve our community. Our purpose is to help people achieve the highest level of well- being appropriate for them and, in doing so, enhance the quality of their lives. We strive to be good stewards of all we do!
From our Hagerstown Smiles family to you and yours, happy New Year!

CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH IS NEAR!
3 STRATEGIES TO ENCOURAGE GOOD ORAL HEALTH HABITS
Developing great oral habits and caring for your mouth and teeth are important for everyone at any age. However, it’s especially crucial for children. Caring for children’s teeth differs from adult oral care because kids' teeth change as they grow. To ensure your child’s teeth are developing properly and prevent future dental issues, children must develop great oral health care early on. In honor of February being Children’s Dental Health Month, here are three strategies parents can use to encourage good dental hygiene in their children.
providing an example of the correct way to brush, and why having an oral hygiene routine is essential. 2. Make oral hygiene fun! One of the best ways to get your kids into the routine of caring for their teeth, gums, and mouth is by making oral health fun. To start, let your child pick their toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouth rinse. Giving children some independence will encourage them to think positively about their oral health because they get to decide which products to use. Then, after helping your child with their dental hygiene routine, reward them by giving them a healthy snack, allowing them to watch their favorite TV show or movie, or setting up a rewards system so they can get a prize after brushing their teeth. 3. Prevent dental phobia. Many people are afraid to go to the dentist, and some children may have anxiety or fear about having their teeth examined. To help ease your child’s

concerns, plan a fun activity for them to do after their dentist appointment . It will give them something to look forward to and keep their mind off their worries. For more information about children’s oral health and how to encourage a great dental hygiene routine, contact your local dentist’s office. They can provide you with more strategies and preventive measures to ensure your child’s smile will remain healthy and bright.
It’s detrimental to your child’s oral health if you don’t establish good dental habits when they’re young. If your children are younger than 8 or 9, it’s best if you brush their teeth for them. Younger kids don’t have the motor skills or muscles to ensure they’re brushing their teeth properly, which can cause dental issues later in life. By brushing your child’s teeth for them, you’re showing them the importance of brushing twice a day,

IT’S COZY SEASON! 4 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL WINTER PICNIC
This time of year, we all enjoy nestling up by a fire, cuddling under a blanket on the couch, or enjoying a warm cup of joe at the local coffee shop. If someone were to propose a winter picnic at the local park, you’d probably think they were crazy. But don’t be so quick to dismiss the idea. With these four tips for hosting a winter picnic, you'll be up for having lunch outside in January any time. Keep Warm Maintaining heat in winter is at the forefront of all concerns, and your winter picnic is no different. Be sure to pack hats, scarves, gloves, blankets, socks, and an extra set of clothing for unexpected changes in the weather. Believe it or not, a large beach umbrella is extremely helpful in protecting you from the winter elements. You can even plan some active picnic games to keep your body moving and the heat flowing! Light a Bonfire If the location of your picnic permits, light a fire to cozy up next to. Some beaches and campgrounds have designated firepit areas to start a fire while enjoying a warm winter meal. You can even cook your
food over the fire! Remember to be careful when building a fire in the wilderness and take proper safety precautions.
Pack Hot Meals Picnics are all about ease and relaxation! Here are some toasty and hearty winter picnic meal ideas to help warm you up:
• Soup • Stew • Pot pie • Toasted sandwich or panini • Warm brownies
• Baked mac and cheese • Loaded baked potatoes • Quiche • Chili
Keep It Simple Remember, it doesn’t need to be complicated! Even just a thermos of hot chocolate; some warm, freshly baked cookies; a bunch of blankets; and hats and gloves are plenty for a winter picnic — ultimately, it’s all about soaking up the beauty of the most wonderful time of the year!
