“We also, in The Netherlands, are striv ing for unity and co-operation in the mis sionary field; and we are trying to under stand other peoples whose eircumstances are unlike our own, in the spirit of love, as true disciples of Him who came to serve mankind. I regard your coming here and yuur presence in The Netherlands Mission ary Conference as a joyful token that those of my countrymen who are in the service of missions will persevere in these prin ciples. “It is my earnest desire that the unity of all Christ’s followers, members of His in visible fellowship, may be ever more and more deeply felt, and that our Saviour may stir our hearts to more and more fervent united prayer. “May our zeal be roused and hallowed, and may all the laborers in God’s vine yard be fitted for the task to which they are personally called. May the truth which is in Christ enlighten the darkness of hu man misery, and may the unsearchable riches of His Divine Love awaken joy and gladness in the hearts of all God’s creat ures.” _______________ The Christian Advocate gives a glimpse of Mr. Sankey in his closing days. For a long time he had been unable to leave his house. The writer noticed on his last visit that the great singer was much emac iated. “ He did not think he would live two weeks. His sightless eyes were ex pressionless. W e knew him well, had often conversed with him when he was in full vigor. The recollection seemed to cause him a thrill. He invoked the blessing of God upon us, and thanked us, and after a little further conversation, we propound ed to him this question: 'Mr. Sankey, does the Spirit of God and the power and truth of religion seem to you as clear and strong as when the tens of thousands were hanging upon1every word that came from your lips and congratulating you upon your popularity and success?’ He hesitated a moment, and said: ‘It Is more powerful. Then there were many distractions. God and I are together now most of the time.’ |

In doing so I wish to declare that I share with all my heart the principles which inspire your com mittee in its sacred work, and that I feel myself in sympathy with those who are endeavoring to carry forward the lofty work begun at Edinburgh.
