Je suis très contente, mais aussi nerveuse. » C’est une expérience où les pages de l’Assemblée législative observeront l’Assemblée législative en action et rencontreront des politiciens et des hauts fonctionnaires. Ils et elles apprendront, de première
main, le fonctionnement de la législature de l’Ontario. Les pages noueront aussi des liens d’amitié durables avec d’autres élèves provenant des quatre coins de la province. « J’ai vraiment hâte de participer, a fait valoir Makayla. Ça va être toute une expérience. » Le programme est offert seulement durant les sessions parlementaires, qui se déroulent habituellement de la mi-février jusqu’au début juin, et du début septembre jusqu’à la mi-décembre. Les pages sélectionnés sont absentés
de l’école pendant la durée de leur stage comme page de l’Assemblée législative. Quant à Queen’s Park, les pages seront sous la direction de la coordonnatrice du programme, qui est une enseignante certifiée. Les pages reçoivent aussi une somme en espèces de 15 $ par jour. La jeune élève habitera donc avec une tante lors de son séjour. Quant à un avenir en politique, Makayla n’est pas certaine si elle poursuivra ce chemin. « Je ne suis pas encore certaine », a-t-elle dit en souriant.

Over 60 people gathered at the Civic Complex on September 10 in order to participate in the Diversity Day. The attendees left the complex and made their way towards City Hall, creating Cornwall’s first Pride March. “You’re now part of history,” explained the Pride Marshall, Lulu. “Be loud and be proud!” The event kicked off the Pride weekend, which consisted of dances, a brunch and several other activities, all under the rainbow flag. The flag was popularized as a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) pride and diversity, by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. — photos Francis Racine

Rabies prevention program The Ministry of Natural Resources is doing a “bait drop” project during the late summer season to help eliminate the risk of rabies in the Eastern Ontario region. MNR has contracted for an air drop of 30,000 pieces of bait containing the rabies vaccine over an area in the southern part of the region, including Wolfe Island, the Thousand Islands Bridge district, and around near Cornwall. The baits will help immunize most skunks, foxes, and raccoons within the designated area, who may have wandered up from the upper New York state region into Ontario, where there are confirmed reports of rabid raccoons. Si on ajoute la dimension de la langue, c’est encore pire », croit-elle, évoquant les défis du 1,2 million de francophones enmilieuminoritaire, dont 160 ȹ 000 écoliers. « Trouver des ressources d’aide en fran- çais, c’est le grand défi. Quand un enseignant identifie un enfant (en détresse), à qui le réfère-t-il ȹ ? Ce n’est pas facile de trouver quelqu’un pour évaluer et apporter l’inter- prétation appropriée. »

jeunes de surmonter les problèmes de santé mentale, notamment en obtenant de l’aide. La résilience des francophones serait plus forte (74 %) que celle des anglophones (65 %).

Cette cérémonie aura lieu le 23 septembre prochain, à 18 h, au Monument de la francophonie de Cornwall, inauguré en septembre 2010 au parc Lamoureux. Les récipiendaires des dernières années sont Jeannine Séguin en 2011, Gérald G. Samson en 2012, Huguette Burroughs en 2013, Père Charles-Émile Claude en 2014 et Tina Charlebois en 2015. En plus d’assurer la vitalité du monument, cette initiative a comme but premier de signaler et de célébrer annuellement la contribution de francophones, vivants ou décédés, qui, par leur courage, leurs efforts extraordinaires et leur leadership, ont contribué d’une façon exceptionnelle au développement et au bien-être de la communauté francophone de Cornwall. understanding what’s actually going on in the universe—why atoms are able to form planets and stars, and what holds everything together— is hidden, scientists think, in dark matter. But before physicists can start studying dark matter, they need to find it. That’s where DEAP-3600, a giant, spherical, alien-like contraption nestled inside SNOLAB, comes into play. The DEAP-3600 experiment is one of eleven currently underway at SNOLAB. The device, whose goal is to detect dark matter in hopes of unravelling its mysteries, is the most sensitive of its kind in the world. Researchers hope to start collecting and ana- lyzing data from the experiment in 2016, but no one really knows what results, if any, will this ambitious endeavour yield. One thing is certain, however: Canada is a leading contributor to the complex field of particle astrophysics, and DEAP-3600 has a strong potential for groundbreaking discovery. The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, precursor of the DEAP project and SNOLAB as a whole, provided crucial insight into the behaviour of neutrinos—a milestone ad- vancement in the field. Queen’s University physicist Arthur McDonald co-won the 2015 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the SNO. His efforts helped pave the way for what is now, some believe, humanity’s best chance yet of finding the missing piece in an incredibly complex puzzle.
Far beneath the streets of Sudbury, On- tario, scientists from a dozen North Ameri- can universities are hard at work inside the deepest clean room facility in the world. Their mission: to figure out why we exist, no less. And SNOLAB—named after the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), the experiment for which the two-kilometre- deep facility was originally built—provides an ideal setting to crack the case. This is also why extreme cleanliness is required of anyone who steps foot inside the lab. Canada’s Slovak community
Slovak people have been in Canada since the mid-1800s. A first wave of immi- grants from the Central European region now called Slovakia settled in Alberta and Saskatchewan, where farmland was so abundant that newcomers were promised 60 acres of free land. Following a lull during the First World War, im- migration resumed, but the 35,000 Slovaks that arrived in Canada during this period largely settled in mining areas rather than farmland, forming large com- munities in Northern Ontario and Quebec.

Tree: Balsam Fir
The balsam fir (Abies balsamea) became New Brunswick’s arboreal emblem in 1987. This tree is an important part of the province’s history of pulp and paper production. The wood is also used for lumber. These conifers make beautiful Christ- mas trees and 97% of holiday pines grown in New Brunswick are in fact balsam firs.
A later wave of immigration saw some 13,000 highly educated Slovaks flee their homeland following the Warsaw Pact and subsequent invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Many of them became celebrated academics in Canada. The Canadian Slovak League is themost important Slovak organization in Canada. Founded in 1932, the league hosts social and cultural events that aim to keep Slovak heritage and traditions alive in Canada. Painters Ladislav Guderna and Tibor Koválik, musician Antonia Mazán and filmmaker Ingrid Veninger are a few Slovak Canadians who made an impact on the country’s cultural scene. In the sports world, notable Slovak Canadians include NHL players StanMikita and the Stasny brothers, as well as former Edmonton Eskimo Mike Volcan.

Nous cherchons le dévouement chez les jeunes. » Selon la présentation de M. Barkley, les activités offertes par le corps de cadets sont toutes gratuites. De plus, Patrick Cochrane, un jeune cadet et élève de l’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle, a tenu à expliquer pourquoi il adore le corps de cadets. « Faire partie des cadets de la marine n’est jamais ennuyant, a-t-il fait valoir. The closing of libraries isn’t just

All you need to know is the current Library Board members: Bill McGimpsey, Evonne Delegarde and Nolan Quinn do not listen to their constituents and do not care for their communities. They don’t care about current trends, smaller library branches, rural Ontario, and facts. The director of Library Services, Karen Franklin, put forth recommendations to close three branches without any proper research and consultation and the Board stuck with their decision to keep three well-used branches closed within SDG. By closing three branches, they have taken away an important service that is well used and loved by 700 users in those communities. The Library Board and staff have left a huge section of SD&G empty of library services. To what end? What is the purpose of closing three branches? Is it solely because they are smaller branches? Or, is it to increase hours at other branches? We don’t know, as it was never disclosed and the plans continue to be hidden. But then again, maybe the question isn’t which libraries needmore hours. Maybe it is time to ask the people when they will most likely use the library. If they are providing a service for people, don’t you think the first step is to find out when the best times are for people to use them? Maybe it is time to use the tools at hand- i.e. the communications and marketing librarian, SusanWallwork - to get more people to go. I have to say, I amshocked and disgusted that the Library Board didn’t care or listen to the communities. They held ameeting that the chair ended by saying “Life isn’t fair”. No, it isn’t fair but it should be just and this wasn’t just.

La direction des funérailles a été confiée au Complexe Funéraire Familial de la Petite-Nation Shields Berthiaume 101, rue Principale, St-André-Avellin, Québec 819-983-6616. Les obsèques auront lieu en l’église de Saint-André-Avellin, 8, rue Saint-André, le samedi 17 septembre 2016 à 13 h 30. La famille sera présente à l’église à compter de 12 h 30 pour recevoir vos condoléances. La famille désire remercier tout le personnel de l’Institut de Cardiologie d’Ottawa spécialement l’unité des soins intensifs. Un merci particulier à Dr Rubens, Dr Dupuis et Dr Chen. Regional Task Force seizes 2,260 kg of tobacco of Ontario and Quebec. In addition to the contraband seized, various conveyances, most notably a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, were seized. have been charged under the provisions of the Excise Act, 2001, may face charges under the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of unmarked cigarettes.
Three separate investigations undertaken by the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) during the month of August lead to the shoreline seizure of approximately 2,260 kilograms of contraband fine cut tobacco. During these investigations, the contraband was transported by suspects along the St. Lawrence River to various shoreline properties where the product was unloaded and transferred to awaiting vehicles. Police successfully arrested four men and three women. All individuals, ranging in age from 18 to 42, are from the provinces
