Explorer Curriculum Overview 2025

Helping Learners Explore the World and See Themselves in STEM SmartLab Explorer is all about helping learners explore the many ways STEM plays a part in their everyday lives. Even in early grades, learners are introduced to real-world careers in fields like healthcare, transportation, energy, and technology. By solving fun, real-world problems, learners can see how their learning connects to the bigger world around them—whether it’s designing a simple machine or exploring how a robot helps people. The challenges in each unit provide learners with exciting opportunities to try out new technologies and tools, encouraging them to think creatively and solve problems in ways that make sense for them. These challenges build confidence and help learners see that STEM isn’t just for older kids or adults—it’s something they can be part of, too. By exploring how different jobs use STEM, learners start to imagine themselves in those roles and understand how their learning can shape their future. Standards-Aligned and Flexible for All Schools The SmartLab Explorer solution is carefully aligned with national standards like the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) , ensuring that learners are learning what they need to succeed in future STEM education and careers. In grades K-2, learners engage in 8-hour units that introduce them to exciting STEM concepts, like how machines work or how to solve a problem for a storybook character. These hands-on, creative projects help learners build a strong foundation in STEM learning while having fun. Teachers are provided with flexible materials to adapt the learning experience for each student’s unique needs.

In grades 3-5, l earners dive deeper into three 10-hour units, where they solve more complex challenges that help them think critically and collaborate with classmates. These experiences help learners develop the skills they need to tackle bigger problems while continuing to build their STEM knowledge. Across all grade levels, SmartLab Explorer also includes five 4-hour industry-aligned SMART Challenges that let learners apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations. These challenges are designed to encourage creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking as learners explore how STEM is used in everyday jobs—helping them see their place in the world of STEM. Inspiring Learners to See Themselves as Explorers and Innovators At its heart, SmartLab Explorer is all about encouraging learners to explore. It helps learners see themselves as part of a bigger world, where their ideas and problem-solving skills can make a difference. By introducing them to real-world careers and giving them the chance to solve hands-on challenges, SmartLab Explorer opens up new possibilities for learners, showing them that they have the power to shape their future in STEM—and beyond.

The challenges in each unit provide learners with exciting opportunities to try out new technologies and tools, encouraging them to think creatively and solve problems in ways that make sense for them.”
