Scope & Sequence K

Storybook Structures Grade Level: Kindergarten | Career Pathway: Construction | Integrated STEM Application: Modeling

Unit Overview Unit Description: In a world where beloved storybook characters face impossible challenges, only the creativity and engineering skills of young builders can save the day! In this imaginative and hands-on unit, learners will dive into the magical realm of storytelling, where three unique characters are in desperate need of a solution. Armed with a modular building kit and craft supplies, learners will become architects of change, designing and constructing structures that help these heroes overcome their greatest obstacles. As they learn the secrets of modeling and its vital role in the construction industry, the stakes are high—can they build the perfect solution before it’s too late? The adventure starts now in “Story Book Structures”!

Challenge: How can we build a structure, so that we help a storybook character solve a problem?

Domain

Enduring Understanding

Career Awareness

I can name different STEM jobs and explain what they do.

Learners will be able to participate in and explore the diverse roles and responsibilities of various STEM professionals.

STEM practices are used by professionals across today’s workforce and will be highly sought after in jobs of the future.

Knowledge Construction

I can use tools to solve problems.

Acquisition of new knowledge, connection to prior knowledge, and critical and creative thinking can be enhanced with effective use of technology tools.

Learners will be able to use technology and tools to better understand and solve challenges.

Career Awareness

I can find out what someone needs or wants to solve their problem.

Learners will be able to collect and analyze information to understand the needs and wants of specific stakeholders within a system.

Whole systems are made up of interconnected and interdependent parts that often influence each other.

Design Thinking

I can do the design process over and over to make my solution better.

The design process involves iterative steps that guide the creation of effective and innovative strategies to evaluate and refine ideas, improve existing designs, and solve real-world problems. Mathematical concepts, practices, modeling, and tools can be used to understand and solve problems.

Learners will be able to develop, test, and refine solutions through a cyclical design process.

Mathematical Concepts

I can make a model of something by putting together different building materials.

Learners will be able to create models by building shapes from components.
