Cold-weather skincare As winter is upon us, there is the temptation of slowing down with skincare treatments – after all, we’ll be covered up from now ’til spring. However, the opposite is true – it’s in the winter months when we need to invest most in skincare upkeep. The good news? You have Thérapie Clinic right here at Atria Watford. The vast salon menu is packed with specialist treatments for rosacea, acne and red or sensitive skin – all concerns prone to flare up over the cold winter months.

SEASONAL SKINCARE

TREND REPORT

The Trend

Routine Reloaded Simple skincare switches to make ready for the new season No matter what your skin type, this unpredictable weather can make it feel a bit all over the place – especially if it already happens to be dry, sensitive or rosacea-prone. So here’s how to review your routine, ready to take on the elements. First up, let’s talk cleansers. You may have been using one that’s been nice and refreshing over the warmer months, but it’s all about a gentle cream or balm now. While it’s tempting to crank up the hot water when you rinse, be careful not to turn it up too high because you could strip your skin of its natural oils, disrupting the barrier and aggravating any underlying conditions. If you’ve found a serum you love, you don’t have to ditch it, but for a little more hydration add a facial oil to your regime to enrich the skin. Try a few drops in with your night cream to wake up looking dewy. The hours when you sleep are prime time for skin’s repair processes, so using nourishing blends and masks before bed will give them a chance to sink in while you rest. Day moisturisers are another area where you can amp up the winter formulas. Change up your light gels for something a little richer instead. Don’t be afraid to go with a heavier layer, your skin will need the hydration during the colder months. Make sure you continue to exfoliate too. It will help buff away dead cells that cause skin to look dull and flakey. Skin cells dry faster in winter months so replenish with a scrub once or twice a week – this will maximise the impact of your moisturiser. Lastly, we know it’s more rain than sun right now but finish your routine with a high SPF – it’s important all year round. We love the sheer versions for light but effective coverage.

create the look:

They said:

To start, prep the lid with (1) Pro Longwear Concealer (£24) , which gives perfect coverage and neutralises darkness and visible veins. Then apply (2) Prep + Prime 24-Hour Eye Base (£18.50) , gently dabbing on with your fingertips to prime the eyelid area for the shadow – it’s a brilliant little must-have for keeping my eye makeup looking crisp and crease-free all day. Add a light layer of our bestseller (3) Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Painterly £18.50 . This eyeshadow base is brilliant for fixing eye makeup and helps eyeshadow colours pop. We have a few great pink shades to try, depending on your skin tone. I love our (4) Art Library: It’s Designer £40 . In this palette you can find a fabulous intense pink shade along with lots of other hot colours to play with. On the softer side try (5) Eyeshadow in Sushi Flower (£17) . Apply to the eyelid area with an (6) Eye Shader brush (£21) – dab from the lash line upwards to meet the crease and follow the semi-circle of your eyelid. To create the dynamic wing shape, start by

drawing a sharp line along the lash line and take it outwards in a wing. Use a (7) Small Angle Brush (£16.50) with (8) Pro Longwear Fluidline Eyeliner and Brow Gel in BlackTrack (£18.50) to create a sharp line. I like to plot my line by adding a dot to where I’m heading first. It helps with the shape and ensures an even look on both sides. To finish the shape, draw a line from the end of the wing going into the crease of the eye to meet the bright pink eyeshadow. To fill in your wing, continue with your gel liner or gently dab in (9) Eyeshadow in Carbon (£17) . For sparkle, add (10) Cosmetic Glitter in 3D Black (£18.50) with Duo Adhesive glue. Finish off the eye with (11) MACStack Mascara (£26) and groom the brows with (12) Brow Set (£18.50) . Dust the apples of your cheeks with

In a blink of an eye, it’s party season again, which can only mean one thing: metallics. From soft powder shadows through to striking liquid formulas, glimmering shades are such a simple trick to instantly elevate any outfit after dark. They’re especially ideal for any after-work transformations you need to do in a hurry on your way to dinner. This time round, though, there’s a Euphoria -feel playfulness that’s been introduced to the trend. Think glitter textures and little pops of perfectly blended-in brights, offset with a sweep of sleek black liner and, of course, fluttery lashes. Because nobody knows standout makeup quite like MAC Cosmetics , we spoke to two of the talented MUAs at the Atria Watford store for their top tips on how to get the look. Got a question or looking for the best product picks for you? Stop by the store on the Lower Mall for even more expert advice!

4 Bottleneck BANGS Bangs have absolutely made a comeback in the beauty world recently with social media stars – think Matilda Djerf’s swooshy 70s-style cut – inspiring us all to reach for the round brush. The latest evolution of the look is bottleneck bangs. They’re a soft yet choppy shape that’s narrow in the middle and then splits out either side (hence the ‘bottleneck’). It’s a cute, yet not too high-maintenance, shape that’s a great way to frame your cheekbones and make the most of that fringe you’ve been attempting to grow out! As tempting as it is to reach for the scissors and try this yourself, it’s one to get your stylist’s help with, trust us. So take this page along with you next time you head to the hairdresser to ask for bottleneck bangs. Wine not, eh? The hair trend sweeping across our feeds

when you can go for something a bit richer, so that it has time to sink in as you sleep. Or, go for an intensive sleeping mask a couple of times a week. BLEMISH TREATMENTS (Use evening only) If you’re prone to breakouts, the evening is a good time to apply targeted products. Partly because it gives them time to hopefully reduce the appearance of spots overnight but also because formulas are often clay or tinted! Pimple patches are another option. RETINOLS (Use evening only)) Want to try it? Go very, very slowly. Retinol sometimes causes irritation to begin with, so a good tip is to apply a thin layer of moisturiser around ten minutes before and after your retinol to ‘sandwich’ it, reducing the chances of unhappy skin. FACIAL OILS (Use morning and evening) It might sound odd to use an oil as a final step but, while they can penetrate, other products struggle to get through them. Plus, they create a barrier to keep other products locked in. You can use them in the daytime depending on your skin type. SUNSCREEN (Use morning only) It’s key to keeping your skin protected (yes, even when it’s not sunny) but especially if you’re introducing AHA/BHAs and retinol into your routine because it can increase your chances of exposure.

CLEANSER (Use morning and evening) A gentle cleanser is your first essential to lift away grime. With everything from gel to foaming textures to choose from, you can go with what you like best. Right now, I like to use a buttery cleansing balm. TONER (Use morning and evening) Toners are a great way to prime the skin for the next steps in the routine, so go for something hydrating day-to-day. Two or three evenings a week, though, you can switch to a BHA/AHA acid toner which helps to exfoliate skin and clear congestion. SERUM (Use morning and evening) Serums are the perfect way to get a boost of targeted ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. You could use different ones for the day and night or stick to your tried and trusted for both. EYE CREAM (Use morning and evening) When it comes to hydration, start with your lightest formulas and end with the heaviest. Eye creams go before moisturiser because they tend to be lightweight. MOISTURISERS (morning and evening) For mornings, either finish up with a skin-quenching moisturiser that contains SPF, or follow moisturiser with SPF to help you stay protected. Evenings are

B illions of us will go through the menopause during our lives, so it’s high time that we talked openly about it. We take a look at the beauty and wellness companies changing the narrative, as well as making this time more manageable than ever. Many of us know the signs: irregular periods, hot flushes and shifts in our emotions. But there are still plenty of surprises, like how long we could experience symptoms, with subtle changes starting several years beforehand in the time known as perimenopause. Something that doesn’t get as much discussion in particular is the impact on your face and body. As hormones drop, there may be noticeable shifts with your hair, skin and nails all feeling drier and more dull than before. Iconic brands like Boots No7 have been challenging this status quo recently, though, by creating a skincare range designed with the menopause in mind. The company carried out a study and discovered that 54% of those surveyed didn’t expect their skin to change, when that couldn’t be further from reality. submerging yourself in cold water in the middle of winter doesn’t sound like the most immediately appealing of ideas right now – but once you learn about some of the potential perks, you might just be tempted to put your swimsuit on and brave it. With the shift in season, our bodies need just the same level of attention – if not more. Depending on your skin goals, that could mean switching to richer formulas and focusing on keeping your hand cream topped up. But if you’re looking to experiment with something new, why not try out the latest products blended with the hero ingredients we know and love in our facial products – vitamin C, salicylic acid and AHAs. You’ll also find soothing serums to keep intimate areas hydrated after shaving. Here are a few of the buys that we’ve been loving lately for super smooth, healthy- looking skin – all over.

to go mainstream A daptogens like ashwaganda may sound new, but they’re an ancient form of wellness wisdom that’s been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic healing. They’re plants and mushrooms, each with slightly different qualities, that are generally believed to help the body handle stress by keeping hormone levels in check. It doesn’t stop at our insides either because we’re already seeing it pop up in skincare – and we’re predicting adaptogens being a key beauty trend to come.
