when you can go for something a bit richer, so that it has time to sink in as you sleep. Or, go for an intensive sleeping mask a couple of times a week. BLEMISH TREATMENTS (Use evening only) If you’re prone to breakouts, the evening is a good time to apply targeted products. Partly because it gives them time to hopefully reduce the appearance of spots overnight but also because formulas are often clay or tinted! Pimple patches are another option. RETINOLS (Use evening only)) Want to try it? Go very, very slowly. Retinol sometimes causes irritation to begin with, so a good tip is to apply a thin layer of moisturiser around ten minutes before and after your retinol to ‘sandwich’ it, reducing the chances of unhappy skin. FACIAL OILS (Use morning and evening) It might sound odd to use an oil as a final step but, while they can penetrate, other products struggle to get through them. Plus, they create a barrier to keep other products locked in. You can use them in the daytime depending on your skin type. SUNSCREEN (Use morning only) It’s key to keeping your skin protected (yes, even when it’s not sunny) but especially if you’re introducing AHA/BHAs and retinol into your routine because it can increase your chances of exposure.

TONER (Use morning and evening) Toners are a great way to prime the skin for the next steps in the routine, so go for something hydrating day-to-day. Two or three evenings a week, though, you can switch to a BHA/AHA acid toner which helps to exfoliate skin and clear congestion. SERUM (Use morning and evening) Serums are the perfect way to get a boost of targeted ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. You could use different ones for the day and night or stick to your tried and trusted for both. EYE CREAM (Use morning and evening) When it comes to hydration, start with your lightest formulas and end with the heaviest. Eye creams go before moisturiser because they tend to be lightweight. MOISTURISERS (morning and evening) For mornings, either finish up with a skin-quenching moisturiser that contains SPF, or follow moisturiser with SPF to help you stay protected. Evenings are
