What does this mean for certified peer specialists? • The role of the certified peer specialist is to explore with their peers how they make meaning of their own experiences and to support them in making decisions about their own paths towards recovery. • Trauma-informed approaches; ethics guided by the principle of self-determination, connection through careful listening; and recognition of the important roles of culture, community, power, and privilege in people’s lives can all aid in better supporting people with substance use challenges.
