• With the patient’s family, relatives, friends, or others the patients identify who are involved with the patient’s health care or the patient’s health care bills, unless the patient objects. • To make sure doctors give good care and nursing homes are clean and safe. • To protect the public’s health, such as by reporting when the flu is in a community. • To make required reports to the police, such as gunshot wounds. Health information cannot be used or shared without the patient’s written permission unless HIPPA allows it. For example, without the patient’s authorization, the patient’s provider cannot: • Give the patient’s information to the patient’s employer. • Use or share the patient’s information for marketing or advertising purposes or sell the patient’s information.
