Welcome to our latest edition of our business magazine and its new name, Aspire. The change of name comes from an update to our key values and mission at the College. The name may have changed, however this magazine continues to serve as a testament to our College’s diverse talents and achievements that demonstrate how we can transform lives through education. Equally important are the collaborations we have forged with our valued employer partners in the region, such as MHA Moore and Smalley, 71 Dental and the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. You will find examples of how we work together in this edition. These partnerships not only enhance our curriculum, but also provide invaluable opportunities for our learners to engage with industry leaders, gain real-life experience, and prepare for the challenges of a rapidly evolving professional landscape. The success stories that emerge from these collaborations represent the real impact of bridging classroom theory with practical, hands-on application. We understand that education is not just about passing on information in a classroom environment. Our progressive and forward-thinking teaching methods, combined with college trips, industry placements, opportunities to network and varied progression pathways, act as a strong foundation for personal growth, social mobility, and individual development. By creating an environment that cultivates curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, we are giving our learners the opportunity to reach their potential and embrace a future full of possibilities. In this latest edition of our business magazine, I am delighted to share with you examples of our impactful employer collaborations and inspiring learner case studies. Over the previous four years, Preston College has seen an extensive growth in learner recruitment numbers, particularly in the rise of school leavers (16-18) and apprentices enrolling to the College. This growth is due to a number of varying factors, but none more so than the development and delivery of an employer responsive curriculum. This has evolved through extensive strategic partnerships working with local stakeholders and businesses; helping the College to create an industry relevant curriculum for our learners. To continue this strategic focus, we are now aiming to formalise this invaluable stakeholder input through the launch of Sector Advisory Groups. The groups have been developed at sector level and will enable employers, key stakeholders and College staff to meet and discuss current and future skills needs, whilst ensuring that the College curriculum is both relevant and impactful in supporting workforce development and a thriving local economy. We would like to gather interest at this stage from employers who would like to be a part of our Sector Advisory Groups, before formally creating these groups for each sector. If this would be something of interest to you, or you require further information, please visit our website or scan the QR code to register your interest. Healthcare Education Protecting Future Generations

The importance of education in healthcare should not be overlooked. It not only equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide essential services, but also nurtures empathy, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the more complex issues in our society. At Preston College we offer a range of pathways for those looking for a career in health and social care. This includes full time college courses for those leaving school, and the newly introduced T-Levels in Adult Nursing and Mental Health. We also have a range of apprenticeships and adult courses which have been developed for those who are looking to either pursue a career in adult

healthcare, or wish to upskill in their current healthcare role. Through our programmes, our learners gain the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the overall wellbeing of their patients. This extends beyond traditional healthcare settings and includes support for individuals with mental health issues, addiction, and disabilities. It can offer a wide range of roles and settings, from nursing homes and hospitals to in-home care. This diversity allows learners to choose roles that align with their interests and skill sets. Sam McKenna, Head of School for Business, Health and Uniformed Services says: “We understand that healthcare professionals play

a significant role in the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and their communities and we teach and train our learners to ensure that on completion of their qualifications, they are equipped to provide the best possible care to their patients.” In the latest data for 21/22, Preston College takes the greatest market share of learners in the Preston district: 41% of learners from this area in the 16-19 age bracket compared to other sixth form colleges who collectively take a share of 49%. We had 120 learners completing healthcare apprenticeships and 180 adult learners. Sam adds: “We work with some of the region’s top employers when it comes to

The T-Level course has been great for me to gain skills, knowledge and experience and I have loved being on placement at the hospital.”

The level of support and teaching that I gain on a daily basis both from my mentor and team at the hospital, and from my tutor at the College, has been exceptional. I am learning so much and each day brings many different aspects and challenges that I love working on. I am thoroughly enjoying my apprenticeship and would recommend this route for anyone thinking about a career in pharmacy. I never would have thought or imagined that this opportunity would be available to me when I left school. It has been through the help of the College and the Trust that I am now in a career that I love, whilst also gaining a qualification.”

This course has allowed me to make a positive impact on the lives of others, which gives me a strong sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment.” Rachael, also studying the T-Level in Adult Care adds: “One of the most significant benefits of studying adult nursing is the knowledge and skills. This helps develop strong emotional intelligence, which is essential for building patient relationships and providing compassionate care.” Abigail, Level 3 Pharmacy Technician at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust says; “Healthcare is not just about medical knowledge, but also involves collaborating with other healthcare professionals like nurses, pharmacists, and therapists. College education provides opportunities for learners to learn about cross-cohesion in a professional setting.” Adding to this, Jane Parkinson, Apprenticeship Trainer/Tutor, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust adds: “Studying adult care through T-levels, apprenticeships or full-time courses can offer young people a meaningful, rewarding, and stable career path with numerous personal and professional benefits. It allows them to make a difference in the lives of others while also securing their own future in an in- demand field. Jane concludes, “We are proud to work in partnership with Preston College and the work it does in order to help the future generation of healthcare workers. The level of skill, dedication and knowledge that is plain to see in the learners is exceptional and together with the practical work these learners do within their industry placement and through their apprenticeships ensure that we have a pipeline of healthcare professionals ready to protect our future generations.”

Sienna T-Level Adult Nursing Level 3

As part of her T-Level study programme, Sienna, 18, works as a Care Home Assistant at the Belmont Care Home, Longridge, where she is completing 315 hours of work industry placement. Sienna says; “I love working here. I started in January and work here one day a week. It’s only a short walk from my home so it’s perfect. The staff and the residents are all so lovely and welcoming. I enjoy taking care of the residents, speaking with them, learning about their lives, their families and their friends. It means that I am learning as I work which is so valuable to my course and it’s something I didn’t think I could ever do.” Vicky Poulton, Care Home Manager at Belmont says, “We have been so impressed with Sienna and her work ethic. She has been an asset to our team and the residents have really taken to her. We have been so pleased with what she has added to our team that we would love her to stay with us.”

Preston College has joined forces with 71 Dental, a leading dental practice in Leyland, Lancashire. This partnership not only underpins the College’s dedication to providing high-level education, but also highlights the pivotal role that apprenticeships play in shaping the future of dental nursing. Preston College has long been recognised for its forward-thinking approach to education and commitment to transforming lives through education. Our partnership with 71 Dental is a testament to this commitment. By collaborating within this modern dental practice, founded in 2020, the College aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills; offering our learners a unique opportunity to gain hands- on experience in a professional setting. Assism Ghaffoor, 71 Dental Practice Manager and owner says; “What sets 71 Dental apart is its dedication to mentorship and personalised learning. The apprentices working at the practice are not just employees; they are future dental professionals undergoing a transformative journey under the guidance of experienced mentors here at the practice.” He adds; “This approach not only ensures that apprentices are well-prepared for the demands of the profession, but also instills a sense of confidence and responsibility.” The apprenticeship programme offered by Preston College is designed to meet

the evolving needs of the dental industry. From chairside assistance to administrative tasks, apprentices gain an all-inclusive understanding of their role in a dental practice. This holistic approach ensures that apprentices, upon completion, are not only technically proficient, but also have strong interpersonal skills, which are crucial for patient care. Apprentice Ellie says; “What I love most about my apprenticeship is the perfect blend of hands-on experience and dedicated mentorship within the dental practice. Every day I get to apply the knowledge I have gained in the classroom to real patient care. By having experienced professionals guide me, this has not only enhanced my technical skills, but I can see continuous improvement each week. This apprenticeship is not just a job; it has become a journey of growth, learning, and I’m working towards the achievement of my dream to make a positive impact on people’s oral health.” Emma King, Curriculum Leader for Dental Nursing at Preston College says; “The collaboration between Preston College and 71 Dental in Leyland represents a shining example of how education and industry can work hand-in-hand to shape the future of dental care. Celebrating Exceptional Apprenticeship Results

Apprenticeship results are at an all-time high at Preston College after the latest cohorts across a range of industry sectors completed their End Point Assessments. We are delighted to announce the following results: • Level 3 Site Carpentry: 8 Distinctions • Level 2 Hairdressing: 7 Distinctions • Level 3 Business Admin: 24 Distinctions In addition, we have recorded: • Level 4 Operational Management: 100% first time pass rate with 75% achieving Distinction • Level 3 Team Leading: 100% first time pass with 42% achieving Distinction • Level 2 Customer Service: 100% first time pass rate with 50% achieving Distinction • Level 3 Customer Service: 100% first time pass rate with 40% achieving Distinction • Level 3 Dental Nursing: 100% first time pass rate • Level 3 Pharmacy Technician: 100% first time pass rate Against a regional and national backdrop where many colleges have been facing numerous challenges with the complexities of the End Point Assessments, we are thrilled to see that our apprentices are bucking the trend and are confidently outperforming the sector norms. Linzi Monks, Head of Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement says, “These recent results represent a remarkable achievement for both our learners and our college. The levels of distinctions and pass rates we have received following these most recent End Point Assessments are not only a testament to the dedication, commitment and hard work of our apprentices, but also to the exceptional support provided by our staff who have been instrumental in guiding and mentoring our learners throughout their apprenticeship journey.”

Chris Lafferty, Construction Director at Wainhomes says: “We have an amazing

relationship with Preston College and we have had apprentices with them for over six years. This year’s cohort of apprentices were nothing short of phenomenal and the three joiners that have just completed, Matthew, Zach and Joe have been exceptional. I am more than happy to say that they will continue to work for Wainhomes. We are all really proud at what they have achieved.” Ian MacDonald, Regional Apprentice Manager at Persimmon Lancashire, says: “Congratulations to all the apprentices who have passed their End Point Assessments. At Persimmon, we are committed to building people’s potential and apprenticeships are a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience. We are proud of our strong partnerships with colleges across the country, including Preston College. Several of our apprentices working across sites in Lancashire have completed their apprenticeships at Preston College, and we look forward to continuing to grow this relationship.” The College will continue to support our apprentices throughout their journey to become the workforce of the future; aiding the growth of our community and local economy. Many of the apprentices will continue to progress into high levels of apprenticeships, whilst others who have completed their studies have been given the opportunity to continue in permanent, full-time employment with their employer. Linzi adds; “These results do not come easy and it is through the encouragement and unwavering support to our apprentices that we are able to report such incredible results. However, the real celebration goes to the apprentices themselves. To reach such high levels of attainment is outstanding; showing great levels of tenacity, hard work and diligence which has led to full time jobs in an industry they love. We are all very proud of what they have achieved.”

Creative Writing Learners Get Published

Preston College learners Hannah Bailey, Josh Gore, Stella Omopariola, Hailey Williams and Jonah Johnston (pen name) have become published authors in an online anthology of creative writing stories. The anthology is created by the Association of Colleges as part of their Creative Writing in Further Education Project, which gives students in FE colleges the chance to create their own piece of creative writing, covering different genres and themes. It is an opportunity for young people to creatively explore issues that are key to them and their peers, alongside building their own creative writing practice and portfolios. GCSE English lecturers at Preston College have been working with learners and developing new ways to help them improve their creative writing.

Tutor Tammara Lindsay says: “In 2021 we implemented a freewriting project to help learners develop their creative writing skills. Creative writing can be a challenge and the freewriting project has helped our learners remove barriers and increased their confidence. The quality of their work was fantastic and we simply had to submit it to the AoC’s creative writing project”. A panel, including representatives from the Copyright Licensing Agency, the English and Media Centre and the Association of Colleges, judged the entries and, from the hundreds of submissions, selected all five of the Preston College submissions. The five learners have had their work published in an online anthology and three of those five (Hannah Bailey, Josh Gore and Stella Omopariola) have been selected for the AoC’s first printed journal of short stories.

The stories covered a range of topics and themes, including bullying and forgiveness (Josh Gore’s The Incident), sibling rivalry (Hailey William’s Failing the Challenge) and even a rare mental health condition that entails an extreme or irrational fear of entering open or crowded places (Jonah Johnston’s Agoraphobia). The learners themselves are over the moon. Stella shared, “The project was challenging as I didn’t think I could do it, but my tutor encouraged me and now I have a lot more confidence in my writing. After we submitted the stories, I felt relief but since then it has been really exciting. First, we were told that our stories had been chosen for the online anthology and then we heard that they were going to be printed. I was so happy and proud when I heard the news, I was screaming.”

Black History Month At the start of their course our Level 3 Games and Graphics learners are taught a number of industry specific pieces of software. The three key programmes in Year 1 are: Photoshop, Illustrator and Maya. From the start of the year the group have been learning how to use Adobe Illustrator and virtually all of the learners had never used the software before. The first 4 weeks focussed on basic tools, workspaces and utilisation the last 2 weeks have seen learners concentrate on producing an independent outcome. Learners were given the starting points of ‘Modern day role models’ and ‘Black History Month’. They then looked at the world of Sport and entertainment in order to select appropriate subjects.

Preston College reaccredited as a College of Sanctuary

We are proud to announce our successful reaccreditation as a College of Sanctuary. Preston College originally achieved this esteemed status in 2018, becoming the first-ever College of Sanctuary in the United Kingdom, and we continue to uphold our commitment to promoting a culture of support, inclusivity and excellence in ESOL (English as a Second Language) education. The College of Sanctuary initiative recognises educational institutions that go above and beyond in providing a safe and supportive environment for learners, particularly those seeking sanctuary. This reaccreditation further solidifies Preston College’s dedication to promoting a sense of belonging and understanding among its diverse cohort of learners. Simon Nixon, Principal and Chief Executive at Preston College, expressed his enthusiasm about the reaccreditation, stating, “We are thrilled to be reaccredited as a College of Sanctuary. This reaffirms our commitment to providing a nurturing environment for all learners. This achievement reflects the collective dedication of our staff, learners, and the wider community in promoting a culture of inclusion and understanding.”

The College of Sanctuary status is awarded to institutions that demonstrate a comprehensive commitment to welcoming individuals seeking sanctuary, including refugees and asylum seekers. Preston College’s ongoing provision includes language support programmes, awareness campaigns, and community engagement activities that contribute to the creation of a compassionate and inclusive learning environment. The accreditation is awarded by City of Sanctuary UK, a nationally coordinated network of organisations and services, including councils, universities, theatres and libraries that welcome and support refugees and people seeking asylum. Sara Trewhitt, Director of Operations, Schools & FE Colleges of Sanctuary Lead says: “The review panel has enthusiastically agreed to reaccredit Preston College as a FE College of Sanctuary. Thanks again for your work and incredible contribution to the wider development of the FE Colleges of Sanctuary programme. It has been such a delight to work with you, and so pleasing to see this reaccreditation process completed.”

News In Brief

Going The Distance After only a year of racing and competing in a brand-new sport, Preston College’s own Student Manager, Jake, and great-nephew to Preston legend Sir Tom Finney, has been selected to represent The Great Britain Age Group Team in the Standard Distance Duathlon World Championships, held in Australia, 2024! Jake says: “From having no idea what to expect on my first race two years ago, where I even had to borrow my uncle’s 10 year old cycling shoes and my dad’s rusty bike, I am thrilled to say that I have successfully managed to qualify for this duathlon after competing in a competitive race in June.” We are wishing Jake all the luck as he embarks on a rigorous training schedule and will be cheering him on!

World Mental Health Day

At Preston College we have a team of people who are trained as Mental Health and Wellbeing Champions, to be a point of contact for an employee or learner who is experiencing mental health challenges or emotional distress. There is always someone to talk to. As part of Colleges Week, Kirsty Braithwaite and the Mental Health and Wellbeing Team, hosted a Mental Health awareness stall in our reception. Comprising of activities, positive affirmations and goodies for our learners, this was a brilliant way to showcase our support for the worldwide campaign .

Kirsty said: “It was wonderful to thrust kindness (yellow sweets, completion of three things we are thankful for, positive affirmation cards and seeing learners dance to fab music) on staff and learners and see them smile. “We all have mental health and sometimes it’s good. Sometimes poor. Sometimes it is diagnosed as illness. Don’t worry. Talk to someone as this is the first step.” If any of our learners need to talk, they are encouraged to contact reception/student services/The Point, who will refer you to our designated team in confidence.

DigiFest Preston College recently took a proactive approach to staff development by organising an exciting CPD day called Digifest, a day dedicated to developing staff’s digital literacy and knowledge. The event served as a platform for staff to immerse themselves in hands-on workshops and interactive sessions, all centred around the acquisition of new digital competencies. Feedback from participants has been positive, with many expressing a newfound confidence in utilising digital tools but also with a sense of inspiration to transform their teaching methods in response to the ever-evolving digital landscape.

News In Brief Freshers’ Fair 2023 Freshers’ Fair 2023 was held in our Reception, Chill Zone and the College High Street. Events like these help students and organisations connect. Students could access health and wellbeing support, discover career paths and pick up a freebie or two. It was a great event.

Great Lengths for Charity Preston College’s Public Services Scholarship learner, Keira, is swimming 457 lengths to raise money for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation was formed and set up in

memory of Lieutenant John Thornton, who was tragically killed in Afghanistan (Helmand Province) on the 30th March 2008. John Thornton sacrificed his life whilst serving for the 40 Commando Royal Marines. Keira is undertaking this challenge as part of the Junior Leaders Course and is swimming 457 lengths in recognition and in honour of the 457 British Soldiers who sadly lost their lives during the conflict in Afghanistan. Keira began her challenge in December 2023 and will complete it on 25th March 2024.

Our Travel, Tourism and Events learners have completed another assessment. Learners were tasked to create a bar and a show stopping Mocktail using fresh fruit, sweet treats and a range of tonics, juices and pop. They look fantastic and taste just as good. Well done everyone!

Jet Away Guest speakers can make a big impact on learners, providing them with valuable insight into the world of work and the careers waiting for them at the end of their course. At Preston College we love to welcome guest speakers from industry. Last week Jet2 visited and gave our learners an inspirational talk on “A day in the life of Jet2 crew.” Travel and Tourism learners seized the opportunity and asked lots of questions about what it takes to fly the skies.

On Saturday 23 September, the LGBTQ+ Student Group, and staff from Preston College, walked in the Preston Pride parade alongside other organisations and groups based in Preston and Lancashire. Daisy Heyes, Lecturer in Art & Design at Preston College said: “The event was fantastic, the atmosphere was really welcoming and we were very proud to walk alongside the students who had a great time. Inspiring Future Business Professionals

As one of Lancashire’s leading educational institutions, we are proud to announce the official launch of our Business School. The Business School will encompass our existing and extensive portfolio of business and professional courses; enabling our learners to study, train, upskill and progress through various educational pathways, from Level 1 to Level 5. This school will equip our learners with the skills, knowledge and real-life experiences that are necessary to thrive in the ever- evolving landscape of modern business, providing them with an all-inclusive learning experience, which offers practical skills development and invaluable industry insights, all whilst being taught by our industry-led professionals. A Collaborative Approach to Accountancy with MHA Moore and Smalley

Recognising the need to develop the next generation of accounting professionals, MHA Moore and Smalley, a prominent accountancy firm with offices in with offices in Preston, Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster, Kendal, Blackpool and Nottingham, has taken a proactive step and joined forces with Preston College to establish a collaborative approach and train their upcoming accountants through apprenticeships. Over the years, MHA Moore and Smalley have used Preston College to train the future workforce of accountants, and this September recruited their biggest cohort yet, with 20 apprentices joining the firm to study AAT Accountancy Level 3 and Level 4. Linzi Monks, Head of Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement at Preston College says: “The collaboration between MHA Moore and Smalley, and the College comes from a shared commitment to address the skills gap in the accountancy sector. By utilising the expertise of our industry professionals and the educational resources at Preston College, the partnership aims to provide aspiring accountants with a comprehensive and practical learning experience which will see them qualify and become accounting professionals.” Apprenticeships provide a valuable bridge between academic knowledge and real-life working. MHA Moore and Smalley, with their wealth of experience in the field, understand the importance of practical skills in accountancy. Through this partnership, apprentices are exposed to the day-to-day operations of a leading accountancy firm, whilst gaining hands-on experience to complement their academic studies.

The collaboration has led to the development of structured learning programmes that blend classroom education with on-the-job training. Apprentices at MHA Moore and Smalley benefit from curriculum design, to cover a wide range of accounting principles, tax regulations, and auditing procedure. This holistic approach ensures that apprentices are well-rounded professionals, equipped with both technical expertise and practical skills. Nicola Roberts, early careers lead at MHA Moore and Smalley says: “One of the key strengths of this collaboration is the mentorship provided by our experienced professionals. Apprentices have the opportunity to work closely with experienced accountants in our offices who guide them through real-life scenarios, share insights gained from their career, and provide valuable feedback. This mentorship not only enhances technical skills, but also demonstrates a sense of professionalism and ethics.” In addition to technical skills, the collaboration emphasises the importance of networking and building professional relationships. Apprentices are encouraged to attend industry events, conferences and workshops - providing them with exposure to the wider financial world. This exposure not only broadens their perspective, but also opens doors to potential career opportunities. Nicola adds: “The collaborative effort between MHA Moore and Smalley and Preston College represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing the evolving needs of the accountancy profession. As we combine academic objectives with practical experience, the outcome ensures that future accountants are well equipped when they move into the world of finance and into their future careers.”

Momina Customer Service Specialist Level 3 at Preston College The Customer Service apprenticeship is continuing to help me acquire my goal for making a positive influence to the wider society by dealing with adult learners who are 19 years and over of age with different backgrounds and abilities. The course has provided me with both practical and academic knowledge about interacting and facilitating learners through online systems, on the telephone and in person. The best part for me, is that I am able to interact and witness the impact of what we do by being able to support on events, as well as meeting and greeting prospective new learners to the College.”

Love our Colleges

Preston College celebrated Colleges Week through a series of exciting events, initiatives and activities. Focusing on the ‘Love Our Colleges’ campaign, this nationwide campaign aims to showcase the incredible contributions that colleges make to their learners, communities, and the nation as a whole.

Taking place from 9 October – 20 October, this year’s Colleges Week theme was centered around #ShowYourSkills, highlighting the vital roles that colleges play in empowering learners, upskilling workforces, and driving economic and social development. Simon Nixon, Principal and Chief Executive says: “Our college is at the heart of our community, transforming lives through education, inspiring and supporting our learners to reach their potential, whilst also supporting local businesses. “Colleges Week gives us the opportunity to showcase the incredible work that our staff, learners and partners do every day. We’re thrilled to celebrate our collective achievements and highlight the positive impact that we make in Preston and beyond.”

Activities during the week included the College’s annual freshers fair - helping learners connect with local employers and support organisations; community engagement - initiatives such as guest speakers to help strengthen the College’s bonds with the local community; learner success stories – sharing inspirational stories of learner achievements and demonstrating Preston College’s vision to transform lives through education; and, staff appreciation – acknowledging and celebrating the dedication of our teaching and support staff who are integral to the College’s overall success. And during the celebrations, the College was honoured to welcome MP Sir Mark Henrick who visited the College to continue his long- standing interest and passion for Education.

Our commitment to adult education goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. Through these series of case studies, we highlight the learners who have chosen to invest in their personal and professional development through an array of courses.

Samantha Health and Social Care Level 3

Samantha joined the Level 3 Health and Social Care course to achieve her career ambitions of becoming a children’s nurse. Alongside her level 3 studies, Samantha has also been studying maths and English, to enable her to study an Access to Higher Education course at university. “Studying the Level 3 Health and Social course has given me a practical insight into working within the healthcare sector, its different roles and has given me a solid foundation in the skills to achieve my dreams. The tutors are so supportive, which has really helped me to achieve the grades I need.”

Samantha GCSE English

Without a formal English qualification, in between employment and unsure about her future career direction, Samantha was finding it difficult to get a job she was truly interested in. With so many employers looking for applicants to have English, she decided to enrol on the English Fast Track course to broaden her job prospects. Since completing the course, Samantha has decided to continue with her studies and has now started GCSE maths. “I really enjoyed this course; it was fun and the tutors were so engaging. Gaining this qualification has really increased my confidence and who knows where the future will take me!”

Adam Certificate in Education (CertED)

Adam’s journey on the Certificate in Education course at Preston College reflects his commitment to advancing his career and a passion for making a positive impact on others through education. Choosing Preston College for his studies, Adam was keen to learn the necessary tools and strategies to allow him to change lives through learning, including developing strategies for workload management and the sharing of valuable resources. This newfound knowledge has empowered Adam to create more engaging and impactful sessions for his learners and he has surprised himself by mastering academic writing techniques, a skill he previously doubted he would be able to do. Looking ahead, Adam plans to complete his CertEd and continue with his professional development by pursuing a Higher National Certificate (HNC). Adam comments, “The level of support from both course tutors and my peers has been exceptional and one of the best things about this course is the sense of camaraderie that comes with studying at this level as part of a group.”

Sarah Cake Baking

Sarah, already a dedicated home baker was looking for a new hobby after having a baby, and decided to enrol on the cake baking course to enhance her existing baking skills, and experiment with new cake flavours. Under the guidance of the course tutor Tracy, Sarah has added her own unique creative flair into every cake and motivated by her progress, has also enrolled on the Cake Decorating course too. “I am so pleased I joined this course and cannot recommend it enough! It’s perfect for people who have no baking skills, as well as home bakers who just love baking and want to take their baking skills to the next level. The class is really diverse, and you get to meet people that you wouldn’t usually meet, which has been wonderful.”

Brandon Barbering Level 2 Diploma

Brandon embarked on a Level 2 Barbering course with a unique background in the hair industry, currently working full-time specialising in hair transplants. Motivated by a desire to acquire additional skills relevant to his current job, Brandon’s goal extends beyond personal growth and he also sees potential opportunities to establish his own barbering or hairdressing venture in the future or even travelling with his newly acquired qualification. “I love learning new skills, and the supportive, positive atmosphere created by the tutors and staff has contributed significantly to my educational journey. The College is brilliant, it is multi-cultural, and everyone is so welcoming.”

Perparime English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Perparime’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) journey at Preston College is a testament to her determination, resilience, and the transformative power of education. Arriving in Preston from Albania with her family, Perparime was uncertain about her future, in a new place with few familiar faces. Despite initial fears and self-doubt, she decided to enrol on an English course, marking a crucial step towards overcoming language barriers. With a genuine eagerness to learn, she witnessed significant progress within just a few weeks. Beyond learning the basics of English, Perparime highlights the holistic approach of the course, which allowed her to express her thoughts and opinions confidently. “Since joining Preston College, I have learnt how to write and speak English, and have met wonderful teachers who helped me achieve with their unwavering support! Studying was such an enjoyable experience and I am now able to move forward in my life, with so many new opportunities available to me, which I am so grateful for!”
