Classroom to Construction with Barratt Homes

Two groups of learners from Preston College have been given the experience of housebuilding with Barratt Homes at its Preston development, Rogerson Gardens. The learners who are currently studying Painting and Decorating Level 1 and Bricklaying Level 2 visited the homebuilder’s Cumeragh Lane development to take part in a variety of practical skills. During the ’Have a Go’ days, they learned the ins and outs of the construction industry from the experienced site team. Those in attendance were able to get a taste of the various trades on a new homes development, with expert advice from Thomas Hudson (Site Manager) and Noel Anderson (Contracts Manager) at Rogerson Gardens. These visits were part of Barratt Homes’ outreach within the communities in which it builds, involving local groups in its projects to provide educational and enjoyable opportunities on site. Simon Book, Curriculum Leader at Preston College, said: “We wanted to express our sincere gratitude for the two days at Barratt Homes’ Rogerson Gardens development. The experience provided has been invaluable for our learners, and we wanted to extend our

appreciation to Barratt Homes and the entire team involved in organising and executing the event. The hands-on experience served as a wonderful example for our learners and gave them practical insights into their chosen trades. “The feedback we have received from the learners has been overwhelmingly positive, and we believe that such initiatives contribute significantly to their skill development and overall learning experience.” The students were able to learn about the construction industry at a vital part of their time at college, ahead of choosing their own career paths. Rhys Nicholson, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “Hosting events such as these allows us to provide a vital opportunity for students studying

construction. We provide a range of enlightening experiences across our

developments and we were delighted that the students from Preston College were able to join us on this occasion. “It’s an important time for the students as they look to plan their own careers ahead of university, apprenticeships or working life, and we’re pleased to have given them a taste of what construction involves.”
