Joshua then became the leader. God promised to be with him as He had been with Moses. God said, ‘“I will be with thee: I • will not fail thee, nor f o r s a k e thee.” He w a r n e d them to be strong and of good courage, for they would have some h a r d t i m e s to go through; if they obey ed God, kept t h e i r faith in Him, and were brave, all would go well. Joshua and the people promised to obey God in every thing. The river Jordan lay between them and Canaan, and the great city of Jericho lay in their way. Joshua sent out two spies to look over the land and Jericho. The men went to Jericho that night to the house of a woman named Rahab. The King found it out and sent for the men, but Rahab hid them on the top of her house, so they were not found.- (Describe) The men gave her a scarlet thread to put in her window, when Joshua took Jericho, so she and her loved ones would be safe. That reminded them of the blood of Christ that would bring safety and pardon to the sinner. The spies came back and told Joshua all they had done. These memorials meant much to the Jews. The one left in the river, for the water to roll over* told of Christ let ting God’s judgment roll over Him for our sake. The one in Gilgal showed them how safe we would be from judg ment for Christ’s sake. At Gilgal the Jews obeyed God fully in all His commands. The heathen around them feared, for they saw what a powerful God they had. There they prepared and held the passover feast, and for the first time in forty years they ate corn instead of manna. The manna told them that Christ would come down from heaven to give His life for them, while the corn, dropped in-the ground to die, and then growing up into new life, reminded them that Christ would lie in the grave dead, but would rise into new life, for our sakes, and take us to heaven to be with Him when we died. Just as those stones were hidden under Jordan so our life is hid in Christ, if we give Him our hearts. (These chapters con tain wonderful truths about Christ. Pray that the Holy Spirjt be yours to bring them out to the class.) Josh. 1:9. Important Advance Announcement Now they must cross Jordan, and had no boats. God held back the waters of Jordan, so they passed through safely. (Describe.) The priests had carried the ark into the midst of the river, and held it there till all the Jews had passed over, then the priests themselves passed over, and the river flowed on as usual. Joshua had two memor ials set up, of twelve stones each; one in Jordan, and one on the other side where they landed in Gilgal.

The afternoons will be left free for study and recreation. The evening ses sions will be of a popular character. Dr. R. A. Torrey, Dean of the Insti tute, will be one of the teachers, as sisted by other members of the regular faculty and some well-known preach ers and Bible teachers from other cities.

The friends in Southern California (as well as those who are contemplat ing visiting Los Angeles this summer) will be glad to know that the Institute will conduct a Summer School from Tuesday, June 24 until Friday, July 25. The program has not as yet been definitely arranged, bu t the morning sessions will be from 9 :00 till 12 :00.

Watch later issues of THE KING’S BUS INESS for full program and make your plans accordingly.
