that carries on its work in pursuance of the words of Jesus, “Search the Scriptures, (the word is ereunate, meaning to search like a hound on the scent,) for in them ye think (rightly) ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me.” Mb- ' i » ste A T R IP TO NANYOH (Continued from Page 154) , Before break of day Monday morning, the sound of stu dent voices was heard as they started on their way to Changsha. We followed at about eight o’clock, and the caravan of more than one hundred fifty students, delegates and coolies reached Siangtan at five, o’clock the next even ing. Here we chartered a small river boat to proceed to Changsha, as we were unable to provide automobiles suf ficient for the party. We proceeded early the next morning, and had gone about twenty miles when crack! went the report of a rifle signalling us to stop, although we were flying the flag which gave us the right to pass' the forces on that side of the river. The boat did not stop as quickly as the soldiers wished, and several more shots were fired at us, none tak ing effect. We were allowed to proceed down the river and after having been stopped a couple of more times, we decided that it was advisable to discontinue proceeding fur ther. under our present plan and so risk the lives of those on board, so Mr. Roberts negotiated with the soldiers on either side of the river, he walking down the west bank, while Mr. Steven walked along the east bank, with passes from the respective commanding officers, while we steamed slowly down the river behind them, having raised the Amer ican flag to the masthead, because the Institute is under the protection of the American Government, and therefore its students and workers enjoy the same protection regardless of their nationality. Mr. Roberts walked a little ahead of Mr. Steven, and was thus unfortunately fired on from across the river sev eral times, but neither he nor the Chinese accompanying him were injured, although the bullets passed close by. We were able to proceed in safety to Changsha, arriving here at one o’clock, much to the joy of those at the Insti tute, as we were then three hours late, and of course they could hear no word from us. As we look hack on the trip, we can see God’s hand working through it, and His mar vellous keeping power, for one week later, it would have been absolutely impossible for us to come through the same territory a large part of the principal cities we passed through having been razed to the ground through fighting and mutiny, and we have heard daily the sounds of rifle and cannon coming from the direction which we traversed. The Institute was thus enabled to open up its classes because of this leading of the Holy Spirit, and we rejoice today in the absolute assurance of answered prayer, and God’s seal of blessing upon this work. ‘
