CULTS CRITIQUE L i f e magazine ran an article en titled “Puzzling Front Runner” by Mr. Brock Brower in the May 5, 1967 issue. A friend o f Biola and of this column wrote the following let ter to Mr. Brower which we felt was well worth reproducing fo r our readers. L if e reproduced a portion o f it in their “Letters to the Editor.” I T IS NOT A N EXAGGERATION to state that every Bible taught reader should be aghast at your estimation of Mormonism contained in the state ment that this system of teaching “ . . . must be one of the world’s most fundamentalist religions” (p. 87). Webster defines fundamental as pertaining to faith: “ . . . emphasiz ing as fundamental the literal in errancy of the Scriptures, the sec ond coming of Jesus Christ, the vir gin birth, physical resurrection, and substitutionary atonement.” • What of some of the teachings of Mormonism? “ Adam . . . is our father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do.” “ Jesus . . . was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven.” As has been summed up by another, “ According to Mormon theology, the body of Jesus Christ was the product of the physical union of God the Father and the Virgin Mary.” A revolting theory. Joseph Smith taught that in the case of grievous sins, man must add his own blood to the blood of Christ to aitone for his transgressions. The doctrine of justification by faith (taught from Genesis through Revelation in the Bible) is called a “ pernicious doctrine.” Faith {what faith one may ask of Mormonism) plus works with emphasis on works would sum up the Mormon theology of salvation. According to Mormon theology, by degrees of “ exaltation” man may become like God—become a god—summed up in the statement of Mormon origin: “As man is, God once was; as God is, man may be come.” While denying the inerrancy of the Bible, Mormonism makes no such denial for the Book of Mormon! Mormonism is not fundamental; is not founded on the Word of God; and bears not the slightest resem blance to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, but instead dissemi nates a long list of false doctrines, totally contrary to the Word of God. Sincerely yours, Signed (Mrs.) Mary L. Lyons
