Breaking Barriers to Justice
Cultural Humility Is Better Lawyering
“Hablamos Español” matters. But if that phrase is the beginning and the end of a firm’s effort, it risks becoming branding rather than access. When lawyers serve immigrant communities, the standard cannot simply be: “We speak your language.” The standard must be:
Understanding the significance of a client’s culture, beyond simply speaking a language, is not about being nice. It is about designing a multi-faceted strategy to win the best possible outcome. Clients who feel understood communicate more fully. Lawyers who understand context miss fewer issues, and prepare cases more effectively. A lawyer with an open and curious mind communicates their client’s story in a way that resonates and builds credibility with jurors. A lawyer with cultural humility presents a human story that deserves to be told.
We understand your story. We see your reality. We know how to advocate for you without assumption.
Because shared language without shared understanding is not access. It is an illusion. And clients deserve better than that.
This is better lawyering. Full stop.
