The New Frontier of Fundraising By Roger Dreyer
The CAOC PAC Board is a group of 20 firms that have historically given financially to help preserve the system of justice we have enjoyed for the past 50+ years. These firms have selflessly contributed millions of dollars to the fight to preserve the civil justice system, making a material difference in CAOC's ability to support legislators and statewide candidates who understand the critical nature of what we do as plaintiff's attorneys. Over the years, CAOC has developed a reliable reputation as a fierce proponent for our positions to protect consumers and an adversary for those who try to strip away consumer rights. The PAC board and the members on it were critical in the recent battle to defeat the Uber initiative and get it taken off the November ballot. It was connections that have been developed through the years with members of the legislature and the governor's office that allowed the legislation to be passed, resulting in the initiatives being withdrawn and not on the ballot in November. It was due in large part to the firms on the PAC Board that raised money for an initiative defense fund years ago that was used as seed money for this battle.
It is also a main responsibility of this board that it works alongside the CAOC community to raise money via contributions to the Advocates Club. The funds that are contributed are then used by the PAC board to help support legislators and statewide candidates who we know will be strong in supporting our positions based upon the vetting and interviews that we do with the candidates. Without the support from Advocates Club, it would be extremely difficult to affect positive change. All of us have avoided a cataclysmic event by the Uber initiative being taken off the ballot. Everyone has saved an enormous amount of money by that initiative being withdrawn so that we did not have to continue to fundraise up to the November election to defeat it. Now is the time to step up and support the Advocates Club with financial contributions and rebuild our base so that we can continue the fight. We face huge challenges from public entities to limit what plaintiffs can recover and what attorney fees can be charged. These challenges need to be met and defeated, but that can only be done if everyone works to help in that fight. Relying on the 20 firms on the PAC Board to do all the work is not only short- sighted and selfish, but it will be a recipe for disaster as we will not be able to fight off the attacks that are coming against our civil justice system. Take the time to get involved and support the organization with your contributions to the Advocates Club.
