WINKWORTH ISLINGTON

Interview with Tusk Joinery & Restoration

The way they work means you get great control over airflow, and when they’re properly built and draught-proofed, they perform just as well as modern alternatives. We think they’re the perfect example of form meeting function — and when they’re well made, they can last for generations. Could you outline your customer process? Everything starts with a conversation — either over the phone, email or in person — we take the time to understand the property, the client’s needs, and the details that matter to them. We’ll usually carry out a site visit to assess the condition of the existing windows, take measurements, and talk through options. Once we’re all clear on the scope, we provide a detailed quote and schedule. Then the real work begins — we handle everything from removal and refurbishment to installation and finishing touches. We’re big believers in keeping clients in the loop throughout the process — no surprises, Absolutely — we often do. Collaborating with architects is a really enjoyable part of our work, especially on more complex or conservation-led projects. We’re used to interpreting drawings, aligning our work with broader design plans, and offering input on traditional detailing. Whether it’s new joinery for a heritage project or restoring original features, we’re happy to slot into a wider team and help bring the vision to life. Looking back, there a job that you are most proud of? Now that is difficult. I’m going to sound very diplomatic here, but we love what we do. So if we’re getting stuck into something, we’re all happy! just quality work delivered with care. Can you work alongside architects? There has been some incredible stand out jobs, from Mansions in Hyde Park to large-scale commercial sites we’ve been privileged to be part of, but, then again, changing a couple of sash cords for a die hard Londoner who’s lived in the same house for 50 years is great too. It’s all of the components together that make it interesting. One thing I do love though, is when people really go for it, be it a design, or a colour, why not? It’s your home, you’ve worked hard for it, express yourself!

Isaac Parker, Director

Tell us a little about the background of your firm. Well we’re a London-based joinery and restoration company with a real passion for traditional craftsmanship. I’m a bit of an old soul at heart so i do get real joy from the restoration work we do. Our team is made up of skilled, hands-on joiners who genuinely enjoy the details. We cover all aspects of timber windows and doors— especially sash windows, which are a bit of a passion of ours. We set up Tusk Joinery and Restoration with the aim of combining solid, traditional techniques with a fresh, client- focused approach. Whether we’re restoring original box sashes or crafting something entirely bespoke, we take a lot of pride in what we do and always offer honest, knowledgeable advice to our clients. You’re well known for your handmade sash windows. How do you explain the enduring appeal of sash over other options? There’s just something quietly iconic about a sash window. it’s a design that’s stood the test of time — and for good reason. The look is classic, elegant, and fits just as well in a Period property as it does in a modern extension. But it’s not just about the aesthetics — they’re also practical.
