CWU Board of Trustees Retreat Agenda | July 2026

To: Central Washington University Board of Trustees From: Faculty Senate Executive Committee Date: July 2, 2026 Subject: Quarterly Update to the Board

The Faculty Senate Executive Committee (FSEC) submits this report to provide an update on the work of the Faculty Senate since the last regular Board meeting in May 2026. Appreciation for the Board’s Engagement Thank you for your continued willingness to engage with the FSEC. We have enjoyed the opportunity to meet regularly with the Board’s Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) and are appreciative of the tremendous time and effort the Trustees have invested to ensure these meetings happen, even through the summer. Since the May Board meeting, we have made progress in initiating work with Dr. Steven Bahls, the consultant selected by the BOT AAC to make recommendations related to shared governance. Our conversations with Dr. Bahls have been hopeful and have highlighted many areas where Dr. Bahls and the Faculty Senate leaders agree on values related to shared governance. For example, there are two important points we agreed upon during our initial conversations with Dr. Bahls: • Institutional shared governance statements that include the roles of staff and faculty are important, but these should not supplant Faculty Code. • Faculty involvement in shared governance goes beyond the curriculum and entails the meaningful inclusion of faculty on budget issues, selection of administrators, student-life policies, etc. Faculty Senate leadership believes that to best serve our students and ensure the sustainability of the institution, there need to be significant changes to this administration’s shared governance practices. We look forward to continued conversations with Dr. Bahls in the summer and fall to make progress in developing a communal understanding of shared governance between faculty, staff, students, the Board, and the administration. We are hopeful changes to shared governance practices will shift as the result of that work.
