When you have a loved one with dementia, you tend to worry a lot. The following questions may sound familiar: What might happen if you can’t be there to offer support or guidance? What happens if your loved one wanders away? Will people be supportive and well‑intentioned? THE POWER OF EDUCATION Why We Share What We Know With Others
Additionally, we offer Certified Dementia Practitioner Training to those who may be working with those who have dementia. This could include caregivers, bus drivers, first responders, service industry professionals, and many others. (You can learn more about this training inside the newsletter!) Furthermore, we also learn a lot from those we partner with, such as the professionals we meet at conferences and networking events. That engagement ensures we stay up to date on the latest changes to the law that may impact our clients. We gain a lot from these interactions. Of course, we also offer education to our clients and their families, and I have had the privilege of expanding that education to other attorneys and their clients within the state. I am the instructor for the New Jersey Attorney General’s Advocacy Institute. I teach attorneys across New Jersey how to practice estate planning, estate administration, and elder care law in a way that is enriching to the lives of their clients. Education is just part of what we do. There isn’t a single part of our practice that hasn’t been influenced by education, both in what we give to our community and the lessons we learn in return. I’m so grateful we get to share our knowledge, and I know what we learn and offer will continue to expand. -Fiona Van Dyck
I know personally that the “what ifs” can be maddening.
As many of you know, my father had dementia, and he experienced a moment when he was alone and uncertain. My father got on the bus one day and had no idea where he was going. The bus driver called the police, who, thankfully, were very kind and knew what to do. It was a scary experience with a peaceful ending. At Van Dyck Law Group, we want more good endings to scary scenarios like this. We’re committed to helping our clients solve their greatest elder care and estate planning issues, but we’re also dedicated to educating our community. As we celebrate Education and Sharing Day on April 19, 2024, which honors Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson’s commitment to using formal and character education to better society, I want to share some of the ways in which education is foundational to our law firm. To mitigate potential disasters, like my father’s experience could have been, Van Dyck Law Group offers training opportunities to local law enforcement and first responders. We want to ensure those responding to situations involving a person with dementia understand the person’s disposition and respond appropriately. Those who have dementia may appear indignant or angry, which can escalate the situation. Our hope is that through our training, we can prevent potential trauma and tragedy for both the families and the officers responding to the situation.

EATING WITH INTENT A Diet Should Be Balanced
Nutrition trends come and go, but a holistic diet is a timeless approach to nourishing the body, mind, and spirit. Holistic nutrition is rooted in the belief that well-being encompasses more than physical health. Let’s explore what a holistic diet is and how it can affect you. At the core of a holistic diet is the idea that food is not merely fuel but a source of energy that influences every aspect of our being. This diet focuses on whole, unprocessed foods, with an emphasis on organic and locally sourced ingredients. The idea is that you can improve and optimize your overall health and well-being by choosing foods in their most natural states, devoid of additives and preservatives. Incorporating this mode of mindfulness and intentionality into your eating habits is a key aspect of holistic diets. By paying attention to where your food comes from and what is in it, individuals can cultivate a deeper connection with their meals. Learning about who grows your food will also promote a human
connection to food, often forgotten in this age of industrialization. Bringing that mindfulness and attention to texture, taste, and how food impacts your body will encourage better digestion and nutrient absorption. Furthermore, holistic diets often spotlight hydration. Adequate water intake is crucial for maintaining bodily functions, but it encourages detoxification, skin health, and mental health. Holistic diets recommend pure, filtered water over juice, soda, and mineral or sparkling water as a primary beverage choice. Water will further help digestive processes and complement the cleaner food you’ve added to your diet. A holistic diet can be part of a lifestyle that nourishes a whole person. By focusing on unprocessed foods, intentionality toward foods, and the interconnectedness of bodily systems, you begin a journey toward well-being within your body. It’s a reminder that true wellness involves every aspect of ourselves.

SELF-CARE TIPS FOR A HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER YOU
INDULGE YOURSELF It’s all too easy to devote our lives to other people, but taking time for ourselves is essential. Some me-time lets you get some perspective through joy. Once a month, push the responsibilities away and spend the day doing what you love. If you want a spa
You matter. It’s an easy thing to forget with the overwhelming obligations and responsibilities most people have, but you matter. Everyone, including you, must practice self-care to ensure their happiness and peace of mind. DISCONNECT FROM TECHNOLOGY The connectivity provided by technology comes with several benefits, but they have just as many drawbacks. Companies design phones to be addictive. Your brain releases a little dopamine whenever you get a notification, not unlike a slot machine. That’s why we constantly check our phones, even when they don’t ring or vibrate. Meanwhile, studies correlate heavy social media usage with profound feelings of loneliness and depression.

Practice yoga in the park or hike through the woods and breathe in the fresh air instead of scrolling. DREAM MORE Our bodies demand that we spend about a third of the day sleeping, and it does so for a reason. Almost every cell needs time to refresh and renew. But many people continue to shrug off sleep, which falls to the bottom of their priorities. Take the time to increase your sleep quality. It helps almost every part of your body, from brain to toe. To do so, implement positive sleep habits. Don’t watch TV before bed, keep your bedroom dark, and put your phone on “do not disturb.”

We spend most of our time in our heads, preoccupied with our thoughts and focused on our obligations. It’s not good for our mental health. The sheer weight of life is heavy on our shoulders and minds. Ease those worries and anxieties by putting the phone away, getting a good night’s sleep, and spending quality time with ourselves.
Everyone needs to distance themselves from technology every so often. Try leaving your
