MARKETING TIP
Not so fast. Before you do any work in 2021, you have to reflect on what went well in 2020 and what went absolutely, horribly wrong. (Beyond the obvious, of course.) This type of reflection is a habit shared by successful people. A Harvard Business Review study found that employees who spent the last 15 minutes of their day reflecting on their workday outscored their peers on a skills test by 23%. How much of a boost could this give your company? Before you step foot into 2021, spend some time with 2020 and ponder these two questions. 1. WHAT WENT WRONG? Whether your company took a major hit or you had to overcome big obstacles, we all faced challenges as a result of the pandemic, but we were all learned important lessons, too. We saw which employees were no longer a good fit for our company and the cracks in our process that were slowing everyone down. Looking at what weren’t highlights of your year may not be easy, but it will be worth it. ( Pro Tip: Start by looking at your metrics. I have a great blog post on this
very topic to get you started. Check it out at NewsletterPro.com.) 2. WHAT WENT WELL? So, what did go well? Despite the pandemic, were you able to hit record sales numbers or retain big clients? Did your team adapt well, find innovative solutions, or connect with your community in a bigger way? Build off that! That’s momentum ready to help you push forward into 2021! Just ask yourself this: How can you make it bigger and ensure it continues to benefit your company? Now, combine! Use what went well in 2020 to fuel fixes for what went wrong. For example, if your sales numbers were low in 2020 but your customer churn rate also remained low, how can you use that success to foster more sales? Promote your testimonials, ask for referrals, and use your biggest asset — your employees who are prompting clients to stay — to your advantage. This year can be the best year yet, but you can’t bury 2020 without learning a few lessons from it first. Don’t skip this crucial first step to a successful new year.
Look in the Mirror Reflecting on 2020 Is Crucial to Success in 2021
We did it. We made it to 2021, and the year that shall not be named can be put behind us. It’s time to move forward, build a better future, and make 2021 the best year yet, right!?
