MAY 2025 7

I n the late ‘90s, as editor of “Street Rodder” magazine, we were on a roll and pump- ing out 300-page magazines as though they were pamphlets. Street rodding and the supporting industry had grown to unbelievable levels and to honor our supporting advertisers we developed the Street Rodder Road Tour program in 1996. The program involved build- ing street rods entirely from aftermarket parts and then having Jerry Dixey drive them to all events on the National Street Rod Association event schedule each year. The next year in 1997 Street Rodder celebrated its 25th Anniversary, so Barry Lobeck and crew built a clone of the founder’s, Tom McMullen, iconic “McMullen Roadster” for the Road Tour. After cruisin’ 25,000 miles to attend 11 events, at the end of the tour the roadster came home to the Street Rodder offices in SoCal. Jerry Dixey made this Road Tour jouney for 25 years in as many different street rods and it’s a testament to the quality and craftsmenship that exists in our industry. By the early 2000s we had created a great com- plex for the Street Rodder staff; first because we had our own space away from the corporate build- ing, second, we had a fully functioning Tech Center complete with in-floor dyno and lastly, because Barry White’s Street Rod Repair Shop shared the same space. A wide variety of employ- ees took the supercharged ‘32 to local car shows and events over the years, further proving its relia- bility and quality construction. As investment bankers swept through the auto- motive publishing world, they were always amazed at the modified cars in the Street Rod & Performance Group of magazines, especially street rods. In time they commissioned Barry’s SRRC to replicate one half of the iconic roadster to display in the lobby of the corporate office. The amazing half- clone resided there for years until it was moved to an El Segundo, California, Hot Rod Garage TV/photo studio during one of many mergers. As I wandered the streets and buildings of the recent 75th GNRS I bumped into my good friend Brian Brennan. As I moved up the corporate lad- der, Brian took the reins of editor for Street Rodder and skillfully guided it until investors and the Internet destroyed the print business we all loved. But no fear because cream rises to the top and A Tour of Its Own!

another great friend, Tim Foss, and Brian came back strong with three “In The Garage Media” mag- azine titles combining print and Internet. Tim and Brian knew I had owned the 25th Anniversary roadster since 2004 and had inquired about the half car over the years. Brian mentioned the El Segundo studio had been closed, but the crew had saved all the pieces and moved them to ITGM’s garage. Brian said they were mine, just come pick them up! After paying a visit to their facilities and getting the parts home it became obvious putting the car back together was going to be much easier than moving file cabinets etc. to make room. During the heyday of magazine publishing there was fierce competition between Petersen Publishing, McMullen Publishing, Argus Publishing, and many other smaller niche publishing compa- nies. For many those feelings ran deep, but the competition is what drove us to be the best and our readers benefited from it. When the pieces came home the two hub caps have Hot Rod Garage stickers displayed. At first, those competi- tive feelings my wife and I shared said we should remove them, but you can’t erase history and bet- ter yet, they prove this little half roadster has been on a Road Tour of its own before coming home to what is now our three and a half car garage. Silver Streak Clipper Tom,

enjoy the video taken by Craig Smith while we were camping in Florida. Check it out on Google: “1953 Silver Streak Clipper Wow! What a Beauty!”

My ‘78 Ford Ranchero and my ‘53 Silver Streak Clipper RV trailer were in the August 2024 StreetScene magazine. The picture was taken by your staff at the 41st Street Rod Nationals in Springfield, Missouri. I’m extremely honored for this recognition, but a small mistake was made in the description. The trailer is a Silver Streak Clipper, not an Airstream which is a common comment from onlookers. I realize NSRA is about restoring and modifying old cars and trucks, but I thought some members would

Honest Charley Garage on TV

C orky Coker began his career in 1974 at his father’s company, Coker Tire, where he expanded its antique division into the largest vintage tire business globally. In Corky’s new TV series, he takes viewers into his Honest Charley Garage located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to see restorations, vintage cars and motorcycles while also meeting some of the incredible people in the indus- try. Viewers travel with Coker and the crew as they pick up new acquisitions and they’ll follow along with restoration projects in the garage, often prepar- ing for events. POCONO MOUNTAIN STREET RODS Celebrating 50 Years

By Mike Salvia

T he Pocono Mountain Street Rods are celebrat- ing their 50th anniversary this year! Founded in 1975, Northeast Pennsylvania’s premier car club started with 15 initial members with a focus on slick, customized street rods. This would eventually grow to over 190 talented individuals who could claim to be a member over the past half century. The club, an affiliate of the NSRA since 1975, con- tinues to foster interest in both street rodding and the larger car hobby in general. This is accomplished through monthly organized cruises throughout the warmer seasons, as well as benefit car shows, dona- tions for community outreach, and a yearly scholarship fund for students at the local technical college.

Through the diligence of its current members, many of whom have been members since the club’s inception, the Pocono Mountain Street Rods look forward to pro- moting high-horsepower fun for another 50 years!

Mister Showman

W hen discussing indoor car shows there is one name that’s guaranteed to come up, Bob Larivee Sr. When the Michigan Hot Rod Association (MHRA) held the first Detroit Autorama in 1953, Bob was there with the Motor-City Modified Auto Club (MMAC) and in 1957 when the MHRA’s first official dragstrip was opened, Bob was the inaugu- ral manager. Bob soon got a first- rate education on his two favorite subjects—show promotion and racing. As a matter of fact, Larivee’s real racing interest was on the circle tracks. Taking the wheel in 1952, he continued to compete until 1977, tearing across tracks throughout

Michigan, Ohio and Ontario, Canada. In 1959 he and his brother formed Promotions Inc. and 20 years later they were producing 100 shows annually, publishing books and programs and main- taining sponsorships. During that time Bob formed the International Show Car Association (ISCA) to adopt a truly innovative method for judging/scoring vehicles. Bob’s other passion is hot rod art and for over 25 years he pro- duced a fine art exhibit at the SEMA show. Today most of his col- lection is on display at the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska. This abbreviat- ed description of Bob Larivee’s

illustrious career can be found in detail with 230 pages of rare pho- tos and the inside scoop of his remarkable life. Order your copy by calling 248-770-1932 or e-mail janinecarlson@sbcglobal.net.

I n last month’s StreetScene I was introduced as the newly created NSRA Autocross Director. In that first article we described the current autocross program and how it was designed to help experienced com- petitors traverse the course quickly, but more importantly our new NSRA Autocross program is designed to allow the normal enthusiast to become more familiar with their car’s handling in a dangerous situa- tion—a definite safety issue. This month we’ll cover the basic safety requirements to participate in NSRA Autocross 2025.

  ®

Helmet A helmet is required, and it should be comfortable and fit cor- rectly. A helmet that is too tight will give you a headache after a few runs and one that is too loose will move around and be distracting. The DOT or Snell approval will ensure it’s safe. Shoes Comfort is important and poor- fitting shoes can make moving between the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals difficult. Again, comfort is important, but we don’t allow open-toe shoes or flipflops as they can fall off at the wrong time! Whatever shoe you choose, make sure they fit comfortably and don’t slip when pushed against any of the pedals. Glasses/Sunglasses Some drivers need glasses when they drive, or prefer to use sunglasses, however before com- ing to the track see how they fit with a helmet on. You may find the style you like won’t fit within the helmet correctly. Vehicle Checks All fluid levels should be correct because any low fluids will quickly show up after a few runs. A good starting point is 32-35 psi tire pres- sure, all lug nuts should be tight, and anything loose in the car’s trunk, glovebox, or console should be removed, including floor mats that can slip out of posi- tion and move under one of the pedals.

At the Track NSRA events are designed to get you racing as quickly as possible, but we do have some paperwork to do. You’ll have your driver/passenger waiver to sign, your vehicle checklist to review and sign, and lastly, you’ll get your vehicle number for the windshield. There’s something cool about that official number going on the glass for the first time! Track Layout Every track is different, so it’s a good idea to watch someone run the course a few times. If you arrive early, walking the track is a great way to understand the layout and create your strategy to run it. Timing Your first run should be slow and smooth, slowly increasing every run. Remember, you are wor- ried about your time only and you’ll be surprised at the incremental improvement the more times you navigate the course. Scoring The scoring is determined by the seconds it takes you to run the course, however if you hit a cone, it’s a 2-second addition to your time. If you run off course, then it will be scored as a DNF. Cool Down Autocross is an adrenaline sport, so both you and your vehicle need to cool down after a few runs, giv- ing you some time to watch other drivers and keep brakes, tires and fluids from overheating. See you at the track!

Thank You Pharoahs Car Club! T he Pharoahs Car Club of Alabama will once again be the Host Club for the 2nd Annual Mobile Bay Street Rod Nationals. They will be helping with registration, the swap meet, and trailer parking. NSRA would like to say thank you in advance to all the club members. Here is a brief history of the club. The Pharoahs Car Club was founded in 1948. They started in Modesto, California, where the story plot of the movie “American Graffiti” took place. The younger school kids in Modesto formed the Fraternity called the “Faros” in 1957. They were too young to be in the adult car club made up of WWII and Korean War Vets called the “Pharoahs.” The Faros were the group that George Lucas wrote about in the movie. They were his classmates. Today, the Pharaohs Car Club is an international club with Chapters across the United States and internation- ally in Japan, Australia, Finland, the United Kingdom, Norway, Canada and Mexico. The Pharoahs Car Club of Alabama was started in early 2019. JoJo Johnson is the current President of the Pharaohs in the International Eastern Division. Chris Rabig currently leads the Mobile, Alabama, Chapter of the Pharoahs Car Club of Alabama. Brock Meador is the Car Club’s Planning Coordinator for this event. They have formed a planning committee within the club and have been closely working with NSRA to help plan the Mobile Bay Nationals and make it a great success. The Pharoahs Alabama Committee Members listed are as follows: Chris Rabig, Brock Meador, Jim Williams, Gary Bohannon, Ron Lutz, Joseph Perry, Craig Wolfe and David Jenkins. Kick-off Party & Open House Metal Brothers Hot Rods will host an Open House on Thursday of the Mobile Bay Nationals starting at 4pm at their shop, 6220 Theodore Road, in Theodore, Alabama. The Metal Brothers team promises a good time for all. They will have BBQ, music, great fellowship and, of course, a chance to see all their amazing projects in the building process. You will not want to miss this! Saturday Entertainment The “Martini Shakers” will perform on the outdoor stage at the Mobile Bay Nationals on Saturday afternoon. The Martini Shakers story began in 2001 in Birmingham, and they have been shakin’ it ever since as a duo or trio in high-energy shows all over the southeast. They keep things close to their early roots, playing Rock & Roll, Country, R&B and, of course, Rockabilly music.
