Mister Showman
W hen discussing indoor car shows there is one name that’s guaranteed to come up, Bob Larivee Sr. When the Michigan Hot Rod Association (MHRA) held the first Detroit Autorama in 1953, Bob was there with the Motor-City Modified Auto Club (MMAC) and in 1957 when the MHRA’s first official dragstrip was opened, Bob was the inaugu- ral manager. Bob soon got a first- rate education on his two favorite subjects—show promotion and racing. As a matter of fact, Larivee’s real racing interest was on the circle tracks. Taking the wheel in 1952, he continued to compete until 1977, tearing across tracks throughout
Michigan, Ohio and Ontario, Canada. In 1959 he and his brother formed Promotions Inc. and 20 years later they were producing 100 shows annually, publishing books and programs and main- taining sponsorships. During that time Bob formed the International Show Car Association (ISCA) to adopt a truly innovative method for judging/scoring vehicles. Bob’s other passion is hot rod art and for over 25 years he pro- duced a fine art exhibit at the SEMA show. Today most of his col- lection is on display at the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska. This abbreviat- ed description of Bob Larivee’s
illustrious career can be found in detail with 230 pages of rare pho- tos and the inside scoop of his remarkable life. Order your copy by calling 248-770-1932 or e-mail janinecarlson@sbcglobal.net.
